“Dr D..Good day… I have a Filipino Olympian Eumir Felix Marcial here in Los Angeles. He is fighting Dec. 16.. Can you help with a mouthpiece only like you can? Viva Filipino!” so wrote Sean Gibbons of the Manny Pacquiao Promotions early Wednesday morning.
My reply to him was, “Of course I will. I have an open time tomorrow in the morning at 10:15 but things have changed. We are now under strict Covid-19 Guidelines and only the boxer can come inside the office. No more entourage like the good old times.”
With that we saw Eumir Felix Marcial, did his oral exams and took an impression for a mouthguard.
The first thing that I noticed was Marcial has a ceramic restoration on his front teeth that needed to be well protected. Therefore, we designed a custom mouthguard for him addressing the issue by putting an additional specialized protective material between the layers of the mouthguard materials that we used and heat-pressure laminate together to create not only a “pretty” mouthguard but a tough protector as well.
Marcial's mouthguard.
Marcial had one request. He wanted a mouthguard that he can also use for the Olympics in Tokyo in June 2021. That in effect eliminated what we planned for him all alone - a mouthguard with the Philippine colors. In the Olympics, boxers cannot wear mouthguards that has a red color. Therefore, we had to settle for a blue and white mouthguard.
Today Marcial came to get his mouthguards fitted, a very important step in the fabrication of the custom mouthguards that we make for everyone, including the likes of Manny Pacquiao, Jerwin Ancajas and Donnie Nietes. This step assures proper fit, good border extension, proper thickness in certain areas, and good occlusion.
Marcial makes his pro debut on December 16th at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles against a US fighter named Andrew Whitfield. Whitfield is from the State of Idaho. He is a fighter with a 3-1-0 record. He last fought November 2019 and won that fight via decision over Adam Smith.
