Paragua, Ochoa, Magpily top GM Balinas Chess tourney

Manila, Philippines—Grandmaster Mark Paragua showed his class by besting his competition in the GM Rosendo Carreon Balinas Jr. Online Chess Tournament dubbed as 3 Year old Birthday Celebration of Baby Uno held on Monday, November 23, 2020 at lichess.org.

The New York, USA based Paragua saw a clear winner in the Open Division who earned 95 Arena points in 36 games for a win rate of 75 percent and performance rating of 2633 to win the event that drew 202 players worldwide.

Paragua took home a cash prize of P1,000, while second placer Karl Victor Ochoa(Malolos, Bulacan), third placer Rommel Ganzon (Cebu), fourth placer Sherwin Tiu (Manila) and fifth placer Ted Ian Montoyo (Bacolod City) received P600, P400, P300 and P200.

The 1.1 bullet online tournament was sponsored by US based frontliner Dr. Joe Balinas, Engr. Antonio "Uncle Paps" Balinas, Mr. Recca Carcueva of Philippine E-9 Chess Club, Mr. Wagish Kumar Rai of Frontier Wheels and Mr. Glenn Hullana Garcia of Brainy Chess Academy and was conducted in cooperation with the Bayanihan Chess Club.

NM Jullius Sinangote (Quezon City), IM elect Eric Labog Jr. (Nueva Vizcaya), GM Darwin Laylo (Marikina City), FM Jesse Noel Sales (Sydney, Australia) and Kyle Ochoa (Malolos City, Bulacan) were in sixth to tenth place and received P100 cash each.
Karl Victor Ochoa of Malolos City, Bulacan (1st) and International Master Jan Emmanuel Garcia of Manila (2nd), meantime won the 13 years old and above category while Franiel Magpily of Makati City and Al-Basher "Basty" Buto of Cainta, Rizal took first and second place in the kiddies 12 years old and below division.-Marlon Bernardino-
