Ivan Travis Cu wins 26th BCA Kiddies U-12 online chess tournament

Manila---Ivan Travis Cu, 11, an incoming grade six pupil at Xavier School, San Juan City, ruled the 26th Brainy Chess Academy (BCA) Kiddies Under 12 Chess Arena nationwide online chess tournament via lichess.org on Saturday, July 4, 2020.

Cu finished with 36 points in 13 games for a win rate of 77 percent and performance rating of 2153 to win the event jointly organized by Malaysian coach Suhaib Azmi, Indonesian coach Kirpan Bahawan and Filipino coach Glenn Hullana Garcia.

It shall be recalled that Cu defeated Oscar Gao (elo 1595) of Australia in the eight and final round to finish second place in the Boys 10 and under. Ivan Travis who amassed seven wins and one loss got a total performance of 1622 for his effort during the 36th Singapore National Age Group Chess Championships held at the Expo MAX Atria last Dec. 27–30, 2019.

Cu is playing under the watchful eye of Xavier School coach Rolando "Rolly" Yutuc.

Meanwhile, James Catayas of Davao City took the second spot with 29 points on 11 games and a win rate of 82 percent for a performance rating of 2196.

In third place is Timothy Jherick Pineda Fortin of Olongapo City, grandson of G4 chess club founder Joel Pineda who had 24 points on 22 games and a win rate of 50 percent for a performance rating of 1801. -Marlon Bernardino-
