MGM GRAND GARDEN ARENA, LAS VEGAS -- Tyson Fury knew he had what it took to defeat Deontay Wilder. It was just a matter of going and proving it. To do that he dismissed his former trainer and enlisted the help of previous co-trainer "Sugar Hill" Steward who is the nephew of his former trainer, the late hall of Famer Emanuel Steward.
Fury picked up right where he left off in the last fight which was a good jab, good foot movement, and he dictated the pace. He was first with everything. Jab, punches, defense, etc.
Both fighters came in heavier. At 273/lbs, Fury used his weight to lean on the leaner Wilder. Fury won the first two rounds as expected. Wilder looked exhausted and looked for the magic two second punch to get him back into the fight.
What nobody expected was Fury scoring a knockdown against Wilder in the 3rd round. More of the same action from round 1 and 2 followed in round 4. By then Wilder was noticeably bleeding form his lip and left ear. It appears Wilder may have had a busted eardrum which may have explained why Wilder's equilibrium was off. It seemed as though Wilder had no power behind his punches.
Fury drops Wilder.
In round 5, Fury scored another knockdown, but was deducted a point. In the 6th round Wilder appeared to be a beaten fighter and was "out on his feet." It was just a matter of time as many in the crowd could see the fight was almost over.
In round 7 sensing Wilder was ready to be stopped, Fury turned up the pressure and began throwing a multitude of punches at Wilder. It was anybody's guess who would stop the fight. Would it be the referee or Wilder's corner as Wilder was taking too many punches and was not defending himself?
Wilder's corner mercifully threw in the towel as Fury successfully defended his Lineal Heavyweight title and added Wilder's WBC title. Sources say Wilder has 30 days to ask for a rematch. Wilder may want to consider different trainers if he is to compete with Fury as his corner had no answers to counter Fury.
This writer picked Fury stopping Wilder in the 10th round or winning a split decision victory. Great night of boxing from Fury and Wilder!
