TARTAN TORNADO - SCOTTISH SPOTY

28-year-old Josh Taylor is a bonafide Scottish sporting hero after his success in the World Boxing Super Series.

It’s been a tremendous year for the Prestonpans southpaw peaking with winning the super-lightweight version of the WBSS to take home the Ali Trophy and become unified WBA & IBF and Ring Magazine 140lbs champion. The epic battle in the final against USA’s Regis Prograis made Taylor Scotland’s first unified champ since his mentor Ken Buchanan, who unified the WBA and WBC titles in 1971.

Thursday evening the ‘Tartan Tornado’ earned more honours by receiving Sunday Mail and Sport Scotland’s prestigious ‘Scottish Sports Personality of the Year’ award’.

“It is an honour to have won ‘Scottish Sports Personality of the Year’,” says Taylor. “Thank you to those who voted for me and it was a great pleasure to see the legend and good friend Ken Buchanan get the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’.

Taylor knocked out fellow nominees Duncan Scott (Swimming), Katie Archibald MBE (Cycling), Andy Robertson (Football), Laura Muir (Athletics), Seonaid McIntosh (Shooting), Jamie Murray (Tennis) and Robert MacIntyre (Golf).

It’s still early ‘award season’ so further fame and fortune might await the Ali Trophy winner.

Taylor is hoping to unify all the major super-lightweight titles in 2020 by facing José Ramirez, the London 2012 Olympian, who holds the WBC and WBO titles.
