CHICAGO -- Great bench play and strong shooting from the Chicago Bulls spoiled the second and final return of Derrick Rose to his old stomping grounds this season.

The Bulls shot an impressive 51.9 percent from beyond the arc and led only by five at the half, 59-55. But a 25-16 third quarter run and a solid 25-18 fourth quarter finishing kick that eventually finished off the visiting Detroit Pistons, 109-89.

Returning to the place where he won a league MVP award in 2011 and became a three-time All-Star during his eight years as a Bull, Rose received a huge ovation from the 18,119 fans in attendance at the United Center. And he put on a bit of show with 18 points in 25 minutes.

Detroit got 16 points and eight rebounds from Blake Griffin, plus a combined 27 points from Luke Kennard and Langston Galloway, but the Pistons' offense sputtered with just 28-of-83 from the filed (33.7 percent) and 8-of-33 from 3-point range (24.2 percent).

The Bulls, meanwhile, shot only 39 of 91 from the field (42.9 percent) and struggled from the free throw line, 17 of 26 free throws (65.4 percent).

Lauri Markkenen stampeded his way to 24 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the field, including a blistering 3-for-4 from 3-point distance. Shaquille Harrison added 15 points and 11 rebounds while Tomas Satoransky contributed 15 and seven assists.

Zach LaVine was held to five points, missing nine of 11 shots. It was his first single-digit scoring game since the Denver Nuggets held him to eight points last January 17.

FASTBREAK. The Bulls formally announced the retirement of Luol Deng. Among the former Bulls in the building included Joakim Noah, Ben Gordon.

The Bulls improved to Bulls to 5-10, while the Pistons fell to 4-10, 13th in the conference.

Chicago hosts the Miami Heat on Friday while the Pistons host the Atlanta Hawks.
