Aguelo (C) raises hands in victory.
MAASIN, Southern Leyte -- Tuesday's boxing show completely entertained aficionados in the thriving coastal City of Maasin in Southern Leyte, and now fans crave for more exciting action.
In the main event, Maasin-native, globe-trotting veteran Adones Aguelo (32-20-2, 22 KO's) of the Brix Flores Boxing Academy decked and stopped in five frames the taller Jimmy Borbon (7-8-4, 4 KO's) of Capiz, Western Visayas, during their non-title clash in the super lightweight division.
The more calmed, experienced, stronger Aguelo, 31, made good use of his superior firepower to rock down Borbon, 26, seating him down in his own blue corner for an 8-second count, then pummeling him even further till veteran third man Teddy Alivio had no other choice but to waive the uneven battle off at the 2:22 minute mark in round five.
Tuesday's success propels Aguelo back into the winning column after losing by points last June in China. Right now, the lightweight warrior based in Mandaue feels ready to hit the road again.
CO-FEATURE: SULTAN DEFEATS MANTE IN THRILLER
In the co-feature, big heart Rufino Mante (9-21-2, 4 KO's) of Ubay, Bohol and Zamboangue?o Boyce Sultan (10-12-1, 5 KO's) deliver one of the most exciting rumbles ever seen in recent memory in Maasin.
Referee Romar Embodo Declares Boyce Sultan the Winner by Unanimous Decision. The Ring Announcer was Rolando Lando Mendoza.
Yes indeed, Sultan, 25, and Mante, 30, battled it out to the maximum level, having each other several times on the brink of knockout during the course of their highly intense six-round war, none of the warriors at no point willing to surrender.
Fans witnessed Rufino Mante visiting the canvas a couple of times, getting staggered and counted by experienced third man Romar Kristoffer Embodo, but never for a second Mante thinking to give up.
Instead, next round Boholano came out strong, staggering his tormentor Sultan with heavy blows of his own, fighting his heart out each time, puling huge applauses from the wild crowd.
Rufino Mante was all heart. Boyce Sultan was more effective.
Unfortunately for Mante, the times that he visited the canvas carried a weight in the final scoring with judges Alivio, Flores and Costa scoring identical 58-54 (three times) for Boyce Sultan, a former ALA fighter, now trained by Cebuano coach Eldo Apawan Cortes.
From L to R. Arvin Von Goroza Fiel, Brix Flores, Efren Machete Gonzalez Noel Flores, Maloney Samaco, Teddy Alivio, Carlos Costa, Zaldy Uliton and Maasin Mayor Nacional Mercado.
MORE RESULTS FROM MAASIN, SOUTHERN LEYTE
In more action, Leyte?o featherweight Gerald De Leon (2-0, 0 KO's) of nearby Hindang recorded his second pro win by scoring a unanimous decision win over boxing debutant Algem Ampad (0-1, 0 KO's) of Cebu.
From L to R. the Winner Gerald De Leon, Ref Teddy Alivio and Algem Agapay Ampad in Maasin, Southern Leyte.
Algem Ampad -- who was much taller and four pounds heavier than De Leon -- was bested by the faster, more skilled Gerald De Leon, 21, who moved well, landing telling combinations over the confused Ampad who never really get anything going.
The three judges scored unanimously for the rightful winner Gerald De Leon who is ready for his third mission anywhere, any time. The referee for the hot contest was referee Teddy Alivio, a third man since 1979.
Plus, Cebuano super welterweight "Iron Man" Ryan Maano (4-9-2, 1 KO) with a frame containing 154 lbs., scored a unanimous decision win over returning warrior Edyson Serrano (7-6-1, 4 KO's) of Negros Occidental who came-in two pounds heavier at 156 pounds. 👊👊
The two combatants traded huge bombs throughout the 4-rounder fierce battle, both men having their shining moments, pleasing the big crowd in attendance at Maasin's Sports Complex.
At end the end of hostilities the three judges Alivio, Flores and Costa reflected same scores of 39-37 (three times) for the shorter, but more effective 30-year-old Ryan Maayo, who comes back to the winning circle.
Fights were supervised by the Games and Amusement Board (GAB) Cebu OIC Arlene Olondriz, together with veteran GAB Inspector Rolando "Lando" Mendoza. GAB physician was the young Dr. Marlon Samaco.
In attendance during the evening of action was the Mayor of Maasin City Hon. Nacional "Nikko" Mercado, Vice Mayor Hon. Maloney Samaco; as well as Hon. Councillor Zaldy Uliton.
The entertaining boxing show billed as "Battle of the Ring Gladiators" last Tuesday, August 13, at the Maasin Sports Complex was a production of promoter Arvin Von Goroza Fiel of Cabayog, Samar, the Brix Flores Boxing Academy of Mandaue City and the Naris Singwancha Foundation of Thailand.
The card was possible thanks to the important support of VSG Promotions Australia, the Wallar Law Firm and the government of the City of Maasin, Southern Leyte.
