The fight started rather slow. Hometown hero Adones Aguelo faces Jimmy Borbon of Roxas City, Capiz at the Maasin City Gym last night in the main event of the "Battle of the Ring Gladiators" in connection with the 19th Maasin Cityhood Anniversary and City Fiesta 2019.
In the first round the two fighters were very tentative in their moves studying each other's actions. Aguelo kept advancing while Borbon backpedalled while throwing occasional jabs.
It is in the second round where the real action began as Aguelo started connecting with a flurry to the body of Borbon. Jimmy retaliated with his own counter punches. A left upper cut by Adones found its way into the face of his foe and continued to land those body punches.
The third stanza saw Aguelo continuing his attack as Borbon clinched. The Maasin fighter pursued the visitor and connected with combinations to the head and body.
Borbon landed a solid upper cut on Aguelo in the fourth. An accidental head butt caused a gash near Adones' left eye which began to bleed. But the hometown favorite unleashed a combo of blows to the head and body which decked the Capiz boxer.
Borbon got up and was given a mandatory eight count by the referee and the action continued. Blood continued flowing from Aguelo's cut as the ring physician Dr. Marton Samaco examined it and declared Adones still fit to continue.
The fifth round saw Aguelo chasing Borbon who seemed extra cautious with the knockdown he suffered in the previous stage. He answered though with an upper cut on Adones. But tough combinations to the head and body of Borbon floored him once more, this time the punishment seemed severe prompting the referee to halt the fight.
The official time was 2:22 of the fifth round and Aguelo was declared winner by knockout.
It was a fitting climax to a night full of exciting supporting bouts. A good reason to celebrate Maasin's Fiesta.
"I am very happy once again to win this time, a victory once more before the eyes of our kababayans," said the elated Aguelo. "I dedicate this win to all Maasinhons and all my fans out there especially in my home in Barangay Matin-aw."
The fight was supervised by the Games and Amusement Board (GAB) Visayas Supervisor Arlene Olondriz with Rolando Mendoza.
Thanks to Councilor Zaldy Olita for coordinating the fights and the GAB, Maasin City Sports Council and Southern Leyte Boxing Association officials.
Special thanks also to my PhilBoxing brother Carlos Costa, one of the boxing judges.
