CEBU CITY--World flyweight champion Nonito Donaire has joined showbiz personalities Kris Aquino and Boy Abunda, as he has been tapped by Uniherb, a Cebu-based company, to endorse one of its products.
Donaire signed up with Uniherb Friday evening to endorse Arthro, a marine-based product for arthritis and joint problems, during formal contract-signing at the post Cebu City Sports Club.
Donaire, who was also celebrating his 25th birthday, was joined by Uniherb CEO Jonathan Guardo, vice-president for marketing Gerry Guardo and vice-president for sales Edwin Ratilla.
Also present was Donaire's trainer-father Nonito Jr and topnotch lawyer Butch Canares, who prepared the endorsement contract, members of the Guardo family, Cebu City Councilor Sylvan "Jack" Jakosalem and some personnel of Uniherb, as well as members of Tribu Guardo.
As such, Donaire now joins showbiz personalities Kris Aquino and Boy Abunda, who have also endorsed Heartvit and Kidney Care, respectively. Both products are also manufactured by Uniherb.
"We firmly believe that Nonito Donaire is the best person to endorse the product, being an athlete of high caliber. He can very well carry the message that we want to convey for our product," stressed Guardo.
As a birthday present, the young businessman also gifted Donaire with a P300,000 check.
Meanwhile, Donaire yesterday already weighed in at 115.2 lbs while he continues training at the famed ALA Gym here in preparation for his December 1 defense of his IBF and IBO world 112-lb titles against Mexico's Luis Maldonado.
"I have been training real hard here in Cebu, and the weight is just naturally coming off," said the amiable young champion.
Donaire sparred for several rounds against RP flyweight champ Rocky Fuentes Friday afternoon at the ALA Boxing Gym.
"Rocky Fuentes is just a tremendous fighter with a lot of skills and power. He is my chief sparring partner," said Donaire, who had also sparred with RP champ Michael Domingo, Louie Bantigue, Reman Salim and Weng Haya.
Donaire did sprints yesterday at an upscale training facility in Cebu, and reported to the ALA Gym in the afternoon.
The young champion, accompanied by his father-trainer Nonito Sr, is set to fly to Manila on November 24 around noontime, then depart for San Francisco in the evening.
"I already miss my family and my girlfriend. I can't wait to go home," Donaire sighed.
