MAASIN VS. CEBU ON NOVEMBER 22

MAASIN CITY, SOUTHERN LEYTE ? It will be the first of its kind encounter in this capital city of Southern Leyte. The boxing promotion is dubbed as ?Maasin Mayor?s Cup, Maasin Versus Cebu? for the birthday celebration of Provincial Governor Damian Mercado.

The main protagonists will be Darius Dag-uman of Barangay Maria Clara who will be facing Octavio Aleonar of Cebu. The bout is scheduled for six rounds in the 119 lb division.

The supporting bouts include four rounders Adonis Aguelo of Barangay Matin-ao, Maasin who will fight JR Mamulang of Cebu, 119 lbs; Lito Entia of Barangay Asuncion, Maasin against Favian Manzano of Cebu,122 lbs; and JP Ayaay of Barangay Mambajao, Maasin versus Fernando Perez of Cebu, 118 lbs.

The team with the most number of wins will receive a championship trophy from the City Mayor.

Included in the special attraction are ten rounders Pengpeng Tempura of Omega Boxing Gym, Ormoc City versus Emer Barrientos of Mambajao, Camiguin and Matchui Okuda of Okuda Stable, Japan.

To serve as curtain raisers will be five amateur bouts featuring Maasin City versus Bato, Leyte boxers. The Bato boxers are under the tutelage of former Orient-Pacific Boxing Federation boxing champion Socrates ?Kid? Batoto.

The boxing promotion is sponsored by the Maasin City Sports Council and the City Government headed by yours truly. The boxing promotion for the governor?s birthday is regularly held every year while the governor was still the mayor of Maasin City. His birthday will be on November 24 but the boxing card will be on November 22 at the City Gym.

Boxing interest in this city has tremendously grown since our Batang Maasin Alex Aroy came into limelight with his latest international bouts. Unfortunately Aroy could not fight before his own local fans because of a scheduled encounter with WBC international light-flyweight champion Phumzile Matyhila of South Africa on November 30.
