NIETES' TITLE DEFENSE MAY HAPPEN NEXT YEAR

The first defense of IBF world flyweight titlist Donnie Nietes may not happen this year. ALA Promotions CEO Michael Aldeguer told Cebu Daily News (CDN) that negotiations are still ongoing with Argentinian Juan Carlos Reveco (39-3-0, 19 KOs). ?We are still in the negotiation stage. We are open to fighting either in the Philippines or abroad. November might be too soon. Next year is a possibility. A mandatory fight takes time to happen,? Aldeguer told CDN.

Nietes (40-1-4, 22KOs), the three-division world champion, is honing up his skills at the ALA Boxing Gym in Cebu City since July, matchmaker and trainer Edito Villamor told CDN. ?My brother Edmund handles his training. They started early so that he will be fully prepared when there?s a final schedule for this title defense. He?s also having conditioning training with Pio Solon to make him stronger and improve his endurance,? said Villamor.

He added that Nietes is presently having sparring matches with fellow ALA boxers Raul Yu, Esneth Domingo, Christian Bacolod, Virgel Vitor and Rocky Fuentes. ?Reveco is a tough boxer and also very skillful and has vast experience. They are both world champions so I told Donnie that there?s no room for complacency,? added Villamor. Nietes grabbed the vacant IBF world flyweight belt last February in Cebu City by unanimous decision over Thai Komgrich Nantapech.

Cesar Juarez's adviser told BoxingScene that he was very suspicious over the injury claim of Jessie Magdaleno, the WBO super bantamweight champion who was ordered to face Juarez. "I'm very disappointed in Jessie Magdaleno because my fighter, Cesar Juarez, put everything: his heart, his soul, everything in preparing for this fight and I was hearing rumors leading into this that Magdaleno was having issues with his weight," said Sean Gibbons.

"Then I came to find out that he has a wedding scheduled on November 11th," stated Gibbons who investigated the real reason of the postponement. "So that just makes me a little leery about him ever showing up. He's showing a total disregard for the WBO, for the WBO belt, for Cesar Juarez. It's an embarrassment, the guy should not be a champion when you act like this and you have one guy who gets prepared to fight and you just completely ruin the event."

"With the WBO we've asked them to possibly to create a fight for an interim belt against the highest ranked available contender. That's what we're in the process of doing and we'll get an answer on that very soon," added Gibbons. It was reported last week that Juarez could possibly face former world champion Marlon Tapales for the WBO interim title, which would make it mandatory for Magdaleno to face the winner or the threat of being stripped of his belt.

After sixteen years and four-division world titles, Miguel Cotto will fight his farewell bout on December 2 when he faces Sadam Ali at Madison Square Garden, New York. Ali may not be as popular as some of Cotto's who's who list of previous opponents. But it's a fitting send off to one of the most significant fighters who never refused an opponent no matter how big, how dangerous and how old his foe may be. He faced them anytime and he always entertained the fans in every fight.

He has fought such champion fighters as Zab Judah, Shane Mosley, Antonio Margarito, Manny Pacquiao, Floyd Mayweather, Sergio Martinez and Canelo Alvarez. He also clashed with other known boxers like Paulie Malignaggi, Ricardo Torres, DeMarcus Corley, Randall Bailey, Carlos Quintana, Austin Trout, Joshua Clottey and Carlos Maussa. Even if he won't be able to face the winner of the Alvarez-Golovkin rematch, Cotto has shown enough to the boxing world.

Saul "Canelo" Alvarez said that his priority is the rematch with Gennady Golovkin. "Right now I'm going to rest, but the priority is the tiebreaker in May. We will try to make the fight, do the best we can do to make it in May," said Canelo to ESPN Deportes. Either Arlington, Texas or Las Vegas, Nevada will be the location for the rematch, and nothing has been decided yet on the actual venue and only the matter being agreed upon is that the rematch will be held in May.

Golden Boy Promotions had started the negotiations for the most awaited rematch between Canelo, the Mexican idol and GGG, the Kazakh multi-titlist, so most probably at the end of the year, the details of the return shall have been finalized. Also, the World Boxing Council has given the go signal to the GGG-Canelo second bout which enables Golovkin to have additional time for his mandatory defense against the No. 1 challenger Jermall Charlo.

OPBF flyweight champion Keisuke Nakayama (10-2-2, 4 KOs) narrowly defended his regional belt when he was held to an exciting draw with the hard-hitting and fast-moving Filipino, the OPBF No. 8 contender Jobert Alvarez (17-2-2, 7 KOs) over twelve hard-fought rounds on Friday in Tokyo, Japan. The scores were Kazuo Abe of Japan, 115-113 for Nakayama, Randy Caluag of the Philipppines, 115-114 for Alvarez, and Kazunobu Asao of Japan, 114-114 draw.

In professional boxing the record for most career knockouts is, 131 in 220 fights, held by Archie "The Old Mongoose" Moore. A highly strategical and defensive boxer, with a great chin, he ranks No. 4 on The Ring's list of "100 greatest punchers of all time." Moore is rated by BoxRec as the 3rd greatest pound-for-pound boxer of all-time. Moore also became a trainer for a short time after retirement. He trained boxers such as Muhammad Ali, George Foreman and James Tillis.

During his time, Moore was the oldest boxer to win the world light heavyweight championship. He is believed to be the only boxer who boxed professionally in the eras of Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano and Muhammad Ali. He is one of only a few boxers whose careers spanned four decades. His final record was an extraordinary 185 wins, 23 losses, 11 draws and 1 no contest, with 131 official knockouts. Moore died in San Diego, California when he was 81 years old.
