The first time I heard the expression ?The World is mine? was when watching the classic gangster flick ?Scarface? starring American Actor Al Pacino. The character he portrayed in the movie, Tony Montana, had elevated himself from poverty to becoming a major player in the narcotics world set in 1980?s Miami.
For those that didn?t see the movie, Montana bided his time until he saw opportunities to get ahead. Each time he was presented with one, he made the most of each opportunity from the first until he reached the top of his game.
Gennady ?Easy Work?* Golovkin, more affectionately known by his loyal fans as ?Triple G? the undefeated Unified middleweight champion of the world (WBC, IBF, WBA, IBO) with a record of 37-0, 33KOs has also made the most of his opportunities every time he has stepped into the ring.
He immigrated from Russia with just a suitcase and a few dollars, probably rubles (Russian Currency), in his pocket. Under the guidance of one of boxing?s top 10 trainers, Abel Sanchez, Golovkin has ascended to one of the most exciting fighters in the boxing world today.
This Saturday in Las Vegas, Golovkin faces Saul ?Canelo? Alvarez 51-1-1, 49KOs, the current WBO jr middleweight champion and former WBC middleweight champion.
This is definitely a ?throwback fight? with two elite fighters facing off against one another. It?s no puzzle how Triple G fights. He comes forward and destroys his opponents. In 37 fights, the only fighter who has given him any type of challenge was former middleweight champion Danny Jacobs. Against Canelo, Triple G will have to systematically break down Canelo and watch out for Canelo?s counter punching bombs in return. That?s basically it! If this fight goes 12 rounds and it's close on the scorecards, the decision will go to Canelo. Golovkin can?t leave any doubt as to who the winner is. He must go for the knockout.
Golovkin stands at the threshold of greatness should he defeat Canelo Alvarez this Saturday in Las Vegas. The boxing world will be his. There is so much upside for Golovkin. He fighting Canelo exposes him to the popular Canelo?s Latino fan base as well as the ?mainstream? fans who will buy the fight. The Golovkin-Canelo fight may not have the same boxing ?buzz? as Leonard-Hearns I, Hagler-Hearns, or Leonard-Hagler but it?s got enough buzz that the winner of this fight will be the new face of boxing and make a strong argument for being ?Pound for Pound? (P4P) the best fighter in boxing.
Both fighters are capable of knocking each other out. Both fighters are capable of losing to the other. That?s what happens when the best fighters fight each other.
The prevailing view is that Golovkin will defeat Canelo, which is why he is the betting favorite. Thirty seven times Triple G has stepped in the ring and been victorious with no defeats. Canelo has stepped into the ring professionally 51 times and been victorious 49 times. He has 1 loss** and 1 draw. That being the case, let?s wait and see if the boxing world will belong to Golovkin Saturday night.

*This writer refers to Golovkin as ?Easy Work? because that's what Boxing Great and once again retired Floyd ?Money? Mayweather referred to him in reference to fighting him.
**Only loss was to Floyd Mayweather on 9/14/13

***Ralph Rimpell is a writer based out of New York and is a Boxing Correspondent for Philboxing.com. Ralph holds an undergraduate degree from City University of New York. He has been a Boxing Writer for over ten years having written for several top boxing websites on the World Wide Web. Before becoming a writer, Ralph's passion was for professional wrestling until he realized professional wrestling was entertainment and not a real sport. It was at that time the 1984 US Olympic team made up of future stars such as Evander Holyfield, Meldrick Taylor, Pernell Whitaker, etc. entered the professional ranks and signed with promotional outfit Main Events. It was also at that time a young exciting Heavyweight originally hailing from Brooklyn named Mike Tyson also turned professional and became the face of boxing. Young boxing fan Ralph just couldn't get enough of boxing as a large part of it was being broadcast on "free TV". As time went on, Ralph felt boxing writers were not being forthcoming with their boxing coverage, opinion pieces, interviews, etc. So Ralph decided to write an article and submitted it to a Boxing website thinking it would be deleted and ignored by the Editor. To Ralph's surprise his article was posted on their website and the readers embraced it. The rest is history.
"I thank God for the Internet because it has created opportunities for writers like myself who likely would not have been given an opportunity to write for print publications. I hope someday soon to expand my role in Boxing on different levels." -- Ralph Rimpell
