Once considered the hotbed of amateur/ open boxing in the country, Cebu has shown a decline in its grip as the premier amateur boxing powerhouse. What has been a norm with Cebu on the apex in boxing in regional and national tournaments is now a thing of the past. The rise of boxing teams from Mindanao has made the shift down south with the cities of Cagayan De Oro, GenSan, Panabo and Digos leading the way.
In a concerted effort to rekindle some lost luster in open boxing in the Queen City of the South and it's neighboring areas, sportsman Lorenzo "Chao" Sy of Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP) and Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Visayas together with the godfather of Philippine boxing, Antonio L. Aldegeur of ALA Boxing gym will launch Cebu Amateur Boxing Revival- a program set to discover more potential young amateur pugs and ultimately, bring Cebu back to it's heyday as an open boxing hotbed.
A meeting was set at Hotel Fortuna in Cebu City Saturday afternoon with trainers from various boxing gyms in Cebu. The discussions were presided over by Lorenzo Sy and Peter Cuizon, who represented Antonio L. Aldeguer. Among those who attended the meeting were Christopher "Ping-Ping" Tepora (Big Yellow boxing gym), Edcel Mike Tunacao (Phil-Aust boxing gym), Fernando Ocon (RWS boxing gym), Jun Ryan Quimbo (Compostela/ Carmen boxing club), Rodolfo Maloloy-on (Consolacion boxing club), Ludivico Jimenez (Tatus boxing club) and Rhasshied Bacus and Riza May Gingoyon (10,000 BC boxing gym)
"PSC and ABAP has always been optimistic about the capacity of Cebu to discover new homegrown talents in boxing. That is why they instructed me with ALA to resurrect open boxing in Cebu", stated Sy.
The plan is to conduct twice a month boxing tournaments in different localities in Cebu. The aim of the program is to unify all boxing clubs and gyms in Cebu to enhance cooperation and commitment, organise a set of technical officials that will ensure the smooth flow of the tournament. Safety of the boxers is also the utmost concern of the organisers as well as the use of headguards in all levels of competition including elite class. Emphasis were also placed to the proper training regimen of the boxers to make sure they are always prepared. Weight classes and age classifications of boxers were also tackled and the possible venue for weigh-ins. Considering that most of the boxers are also students, the tournament will be held on weekends to avoid interference with academic obligations.
For his part, Cuizon said that ALA pledged to provide all-out support to ABAP and PSC. He is willing to lend the boxing ring for the tournaments as well as the official tournament equipments for free. "Safety of boxers has always been the primary concern of Sir ALA. That's why he is offering free use of official tournament equipments like gloves, head guard and foul protector", said Cuizon, referring to Aldeguer. Uniforms for the boxers will also be provided during the competitions by ALA.
