Mayweather Likely Praying Jacobs Defeats GGG

Fifteen years ago on April 20, 2002, Floyd Mayweather, Jr (49-0, 26KOs) had probably the toughest fight of his career when he moved up from the junior lightweight division to challenge then WBC champ Jose Luis Castillo!

Mayweather was not able to impose his will on the bigger Castillo who frustrated Mayweather for 12 rounds. Many in the arena and those viewing the fight at home thought that Castillo had been robbed of his title when Mayweather was awarded the decision victory and the WBC lightweight championship. A rematch had to be made to resolve this controversy. Nearly eight months later, Mayweather fought a cautious tactical rematch against Castillo to secure a victory and moved on with his career. After that experience he would never place himself in a similar predicament. He never fought welterweight champion Paul Williams until Williams eventually lost to Sergio Martinez and then eventually retired due to injuries from a motorcycle accident.

When his former Promoter, Bob Arum, tried to make a fight between him and former stablemate Antonio Margarito he flat out refused without giving any valid reason even though he was offered a reported whopping 8 million dollars which would have been his highest payday at the time. Antonio Margarito was riding high after defeating Miguel Cotto, only to later lose by TKO to Shane Mosely. To make matters worse, Margarito was caught suspended from boxing illegally wrapping his hands for the match against Mosley. Both fights Mayweather-Margarito and Mayweather-Williams were fights the fans were salivating for!

Fast forward to the year 2017. Genady Golovkin (36-0, 33K0s) the unified world middleweight champion who faces title holder Daniel Jacobs (32-1, 29K0s) has gone on the record to say he would be willing to fight Mayweather at 154lbs*. When a fight against Golovkin was proposed to Mayweather, he referred to Golovkin as ?Easy Work?. Golovkin has even asked Mayweather to in fact prove that he is ?Easy Work.? He ignored Golovkin?s invitation to fight. Instead Mayweather is actively pursuing a fight with MMA UFC fighter Connor McGregor who has a boxing record of 0-0,0KOs.

To date, all other Golovkin opponents have been underdogs and had little chance to defeat Golovkin. Daniel Jacobs is an underdog as well against Golovkin. Some Boxing experts are giving Jacobs a chance to pull what would be an ?upset of the year? to defeat Golovkin due to Jacobs?s size advantage, punching power, and boxing ability.

A Jacobs victory this Saturday at Madison Square Garden would come at the right time for Mayweather. It would validate Mayweather?s opinion of Golovkin as ?Easy work? and all the more reason why he would?ve wasted his time to fight him. In the past Mayweather has admitted he fights who he wants to fight.

According to this writer?s sources, one reason why Mayweather?s relationship went sour with Bob Arum was Arum?s communication to the Media of his frustration of not securing a fight between Margarito and Mayweather for no apparent reason even though Arum offered Mayweather a reported whopping 8 million Dollars. Mayweather reportedly didn?t like that Arum made it public and reportedly made Arum pay for it by not staying with Top Rank and later not wanting him involved in the promotion of his fight against Pacquiao citing other reasons such as Arum didn?t Promote him properly.

So once again another potential dangerous opponent for Mayweather such as Golovkin who Mayweather clearly does not want to fight could lose against another dangerous fighter like Jacobs. If Jacobs should prevail this Saturday, that would take Mayweather ?off the hook? in terms of boxing writers suggesting he avoided Golovkin. So considering Mayweather?s past strategies of who he fights, it wouldn?t surprise me in the least of Mayweather is praying that Jacobs defeats Golovkin.

*Mayweather defeated Oscar De La Hoya via Split decision winning the WBC 154lb championship on May 5, 2007. He also captured the WBA 154lb championship on May 5, 2012 when he defeated Miguel Cotto. He held those titles until he officially retired the 1st time from boxing after defeating Andre Berto on September 12, 2015.
