This Saturday at the MGM grand in Las Vegas, WBO jr welterweight champion Terrence Crawford and WBC jr welterweight champion, Victor Postol, will fight in a unification match for supremacy in the 140lb division. This fight means more than just supremacy, as the winner will undoubtedly have the opportunity to fill the eventual void that Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather will eventually leave when they truly retire from the sport of Boxing.
Crawford who is a ?regular? on HBO will test the PPV waters to see what kind of reception by way of sales he receives. This will be no easy task for Crawford. He will be fighting a fellow champion trained by Hall of Fame trainer, Freddie Roach who also happens to be the trainer of Manny Pacquiao. Crawford can?t just bring his ?A? game if he is to defeat the motivated Postol. He has to bring his A+ game. Freddie Roach and Postol are not just here for paydays. Roach believes Postol can pull off the upset by defeating the favored Crawford. Postol has trained accordingly. So what can we expect at the sound of the opening bell?
Crawford?s undefeated record stands at 28-0, 20KOs. He has the ability to fight as a right or left hander. He generally starts slow and makes adjustments as the fight progresses. I see this fight no different than his other bouts. Crawford will look to pick his spots and if he is able to hurt Postol, Crawford will try and go for the knockout. Postol is 28-0, 12KOs. It appears that Crawford has the advantage in punching power when comparing both fighters? records. That will not make a difference because Postol too has punching power. It was combination punching and power that stopped the world class Lucas Matthysse. Postol will look to outwork Crawford and try to back him up to offset his game. He will try to set traps for Crawford, trying to capitalize on his weaknesses turning it to his advantage. Postol will have to fight an almost perfect fight. He will have to outbox Crawford which will not be easy. If he should hurt Crawford he must seize the moment.
This writer sees both fighters having some success with the momentum swinging back and forth in both fighters favor early. This fight will come down to who will be able to impose their will over the other. This is a ?pick em? fight that can go either way. Postol by knockout in 8th round, or Crawford by decision victory (7 rounds to 5 rounds or Decision victory 115-113).
