FANTASTIC FIGHT CARD IN TAAL; PARRENAS RETAINS WBO ORIENTAL SUPER FLYWEIGHT TITLE

In a fantastic, action-packed fight card at Barangay Pook in Taal, Batangas, WBO Oriental super flyweight champion Warlito Parrenas scored a clear unanimous twelve round decision over game Indonesian Espinos Sabu to retain his title before a huge crowd on a hot and humid evening.
Boxing judge Salven Lagumbay informed us that Sabu?s father is a Filipino and his name on Facebook is Subu.
Parrenas worked behind a stinging jab and solid one-two combinations from the outside and on occasions ripped shots to the body of the Indonesian challenger who hardly flinched and even connected with good combinations of his own but the work-rate of the defending champion was just too much for Sabu whose solid defense was a key to his survival.
All three judges scored the fight for Parrenas with Lagumbay and Elmer Lopez having the lanky 31 year old Parrenas who fights out of Japan where he also uses the ring name Wars Katsumata a comfortable winner 119-110 while the third judge Dan Nietes had Parrenas ahead 118-110.
With the win Parrenas improves to 20-6 with 17 knockouts while Sabu suffered only the second defeat of his career to wind up with a record of 11-2-1 with 5 knockouts.
In the main supporting bout in the card presented by promoters Edgar ?Mark? De Castro of United Boxing Gym which is based in Malate, Manila and Ryuta Kato of the United International Boxing Gym of Japan with Taal Mayor Michael Montenegro as host, tough veteran Ardin Diale proved too strong a puncher for 20 year old Renerio Arizala of the Arci Boxing Stable in Mandaluyong City, winning by a 4th round TKO.
Respected veteran referee Ferdinan Estrella waved the fight off with the official time 0:35 of the fourth round.
Arizala stunned Diale early in the opening round when in a furious exchange on the ropes he nailed the veteran with a perfect counter-punch to the solar plexus and dropped him.
The undefeated Arizala rocked Diale in round three but the hard-hitting Philippine flyweight champion came back to drop Arizala later in the round before battering the youngster in round four forcing trainer Jonathan Penalosa, an outstanding former boxer and brother of former two- division world champions Gerry and Dodie Boy Penalosa to jump into the ring to embrace his fighter and prevent him from absorbing any further punishment.
Arizala cried on Penalosa?s shoulder because he felt he could continue but Penalosa?s better judgment prevailed so the talented young fighter could live to fight another day.
Diale who was impressed by Arizala?s skill and courage improved to 24-9-3 with 11 knockouts while Arizala who suffered his first defeat dropped to 11-1-1 with 4 knockouts.
Rene Dacquel, a promising 23 year old who was held to a split draw by Japan?s Ryotaro Kawabata in a clash for the WBC Youth world super flyweight championship last July 21 in Okayama, Japan made no mistake this time around dropping 20 year old Menard Abila twice with stinging right hands in round five before landing a solid left to send Abila crashing into the ropes before referee Samson Libres called a halt at 2:51 of the eighth round.
Under the WBC open scoring system, Dacquel led on the scorecards of all three judges at the end of the fourth round, 39-37.
Hard-hitting super bantamweight Rey Juntilla had too much power for Jovil Marayan and blasted the fighter from the Hardcore Boxing Gym in Malolos, Bulacan to add to Marayan?s woeful record which dropped to 7-19-3 with 3 knockouts with a TKO in the 2nd round . The time was 1:46.
In a wild and wooly ten round featherweight encounter which was effectively ruined by the slippery canvas caused by trainers dowsing their fighters with water in-between rounds in a virtual bath, southpaw Nino Magboo survived a surprisingly strong Rex Olisa to win by a unanimous decision.
Judges Salven Lagumbay and Fernando Batistil scored the fight 98-91 while Elmer Lopez scored it 98-90 for Magboo, a fighter of youthful Elmer Anuran of nearby Agoncillo, Batangas who had a contingent of fans cheering him on.
The fans were silenced in the opening round when Olisa decked Magboo who returned the favor in later in the round when he sent Olisa to the canvas with a left hook.
The southpaw Magboo dropped Olisa who kept coming forward once more in round four with a right hook before referee Sammy Bernabe cautioned the Anuran fighter for two low blows.
He was a well-deserved winner but Olisa, from the Cucoy Elorde Boxing Gym in Mandaluyong City never gave up and made the fight a fitting finale for a fight card deeply appreciated by the fans who stayed until the winner decision was announced.
