Residents of The Municipality of Glan in Sarangani Province are in cheerful mood these days as their paradisaical boxing-loving coastal town celebrates its centennial founding anniversary with an exciting international fight card this coming Sunday (Oct 5) as part of the festivities.
The thrill is double as one of the card supporters is their beloved son and congressman Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao, who spent his childhood years in the Town of Glan.
In the 12-rounder main event, world-ranked Jether "The General" Oliva will battle Indonesian veteran Jemmy "Boom Boom" Gobel for the vacant World Boxing Federation (WBF) Asia Pacific 112 lbs title, a fight that the 27-year-old Gensan fighter can not afford to lose.
For one reason, Oliva and his team would like a rematch with IBO champion Moruti Mthalane.
"We want a rematch with Mthalane anytime, anywhere. Mthalane knows that he lost that fight against Oliva," shared Oliva's manager Jim Claude Manangquil.
Last March in the land of Nelson Mandela, Jether Oliva (21-2-2, 10 KO's) battled 12 torrid rounds against the tough South African veteran Moruti Mthalane, a fight that Oliva lost in a razor-thin controversial split decision.

Should Jether Oliva emerge victorious this Sunday (Oct 5), the idea of the Filipino challenging Mthalane or another world champion stays alive. A defeat at the hands of the Indonesian would be disastrous...
That's why Oliva keeps his training as his number one boxing priority.
"He trains with coach Renie Gabawa at Sanman Gym in Gensan. Training is every day together with Sanman stablemates WBA interim Jr. Flyweight Champion Randy Petalcorin (22-1-1, 17 KO's) and with unbeaten WBF interim 130 lbs titlist Hermonito Dela Torre (14-0, 9 KO's)
"And Oliva will stay in the flyweights. It's the division where he keeps his power and speed," commented Manangquil, director of JM Promotions.
MORE FIGHTS
In another clash that will delight fans, former amateur standout Mark Angelo Plana, a new addition to the the Sanman Boxing Stable, will wage his second pro fight against dangerous Jason Cabilla in a 4-rounder in the bantamweight division.
Plana is a former Philippine Amateur National Team Member who competed at the Amateur International Boxing Association (AIBA) Junior World Boxing Championships in September of last year in Kiev, Ukraine. His international boxing experience as amateur could prove valuable in his boxing career.
But Plana has to pass Cabilla who does not have the amateur pedigree of Plana, but who is a warrior ready to rumble.
Also, hard-swinging knockout artist Christian Araneta (5-0, 4 KO's) will collide against big-heart Bonjun Loperez 8-1, 4 KO's) in an 8-round war in the Jr. Flyweight division.
In addition, Kenny Demecillo (7-2-1, 4 KO's) of Iligan, Lanao del Norte, will take on Gensan's Vergel Deguma. The 22-year-old Demecillo comes from knocking out Rogen Flores last month at Tabunok Sports Complex in Cebu, while Deguma, 19, scored a decision win over Renante Suacasa at Lagao Gym in Gensan.
In the first clashes of the evening, debutant Jose Aballe will battle Michael Javier in the flyweight division; and 105-pound weight class Orlie Silvestre, 20, of Sultan Kudarat will take on newcomer Ryan Bahala.
Fights will be at Glan Gymnasium in the Municipality of Glan in Sarangani Province. Come over with family and friends for an exciting evening of boxing.
The card - part of the celebrations of Glan's 100 years anniversary - will be staged thanks to the kind support of Sarangani Congressman and world champion Manny Pacquiao in cooperation with Buboy Fernandez Promotions, Sanman Promotions, Errol Elicanal and Lonsdale.
