Roca, Bernardino share top honors in Tea Block rapid chess tournament

International Master Petronio Roca and National Master Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr. shared top honors at the conclusion of the 2nd Tea Block Rapid Chess Tournament at the Tea Block inside First Cavite Industrial Estate in Dasmarinas City, Cavite Saturday night, March 7, 2026.

Roca and Bernardino, both finished identical 7.5 points apiece to finish in a tie for first place.

"I am very happy with my performance tonight," said Roca, who also won the inaugural tournament last February 12.

Roca is a retired Professional Mechanical engineer of Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) and owner of Tea Block Milk Tea and Ice Creamery who is also a member of the Philippine Team who is best ever 7th-place finish in the 28th Chess Olympiad in Thessaloniki, Greece took place between November 12 and November 30, 1988.

Engr. Roca is a resident of Dasmarinas City, Cavite who hails from Palo, Leyte.

"It was an intense game," added Bernardino, a veteran sportswriter and radio commentator, who won the 2005 Arlington, Virginia, USA Rapid Open Chess Tournament and the 2024 Laos Open (Standard) Chess Tournament.

Bernardino, a resident of Quezon City and Mandaluyong City whose roots is from Binalonan, Pangasinan.

Noel Jay Estacio would up solo third place with 5.5 points followed by fourth placer National Master Romeo Alcodia with 4.5 points and fifth placer National Master Ronan Ricafrente Andrade with 4.0 points.

Richard Cornell Manzano landed at sixth place with 1.0 point.

The 1-day 15 minutes plus 5 second increment rapid time control format is hosted and sponsored by Lady Eagle Doc Elvira Roca and Tea Block. (Marlon Bernardino)
