Amateur Boxing Alliance of the Philippines executive director Ed Picson has clarified media reports that they brought uniforms to Incheon, South Korea for the Asian Games boxing competition that did not comply with the requirements.

Picson in an email to the Manila Standard/Viva Sports said ?the truth is, our uniforms were approved by the International Boxing Association (AIBA) no less, through its executive director, Mr. Ho Kim. I personally wrote him several months back and sent him pictures and he said they conformed to the rules.?

Picson said that after the first day of competition, he was informed by coach Nolito Velasco that our uniform was disallowed.

He said he ?immediately investigated and the reason advanced was that it was the Asian Games Organizing Committee that disallowed uniforms with sponsors' names on them. Ours had the PLDT logo printed in front and we have used this for more than 5 years now.?

The ABAP executive director disclosed that he ?spoke to Tournament Supervisor David Francis about this and reminded him that during the Technical Meeting on September 22, he even announced that the AIBA rule was to prevail regarding uniforms. But he said there was nothing that could be done.?

This reminds us of the situation with naturalized player Andray Blatche who was cleared to play the governing body for basketball ? FIBA ? but was disallowed by the Incheon Asian Games Organizing Committee.

Picson said that Francis told him Wesing uniforms were being issued by the Korean organizers for teams that needed them. These were what our boxers used in the interim.

Acting swiftly the ABAP executive director inquired ?from several local boxing people as to where we could purchase uniforms but with the language problem, coupled with the fact that boxing apparel is a specialized product, it took another day before I could get a supplier to deliver from Seoul.?

He disclosed that the uniforms arrived on the evening of the third day and he ?had to pay a ridiculously high price for them, but I had no choice.?

Josie Gabuco was the first to use the new Adidas uniform today (the 4th day). All team members were given a set of red and blue uniforms.
