Nesthy Petecio.
The heartbreaking loss of Gilas Pilipinas was somewhat compensated yesterday when four of our boxers entered the quarter finals in the fights telecast by TV 5.
Our only two female boxers, world No. 1 Josie Gabuco and an aggressive Nesthy Petecio won their bouts to enter the round of eight.
Gabuco was a little too eager to dominate against Chinese-Taipei?s Lin Yu Ting who hardly threw a punch and keep clinching most of the time as she felt the power of the punches of Gabuco who won the gold medal in the 2012 AIBA Women?s world championships. And was a three-time gold medal winner at the Southeast Asian Games.
The coach of Lin, Tseng Tzu Chiang said before the fight that his fighter won?t lose the opportunity to attack but she hardly did as Gabuco controlled the fight from the opening bell to win a unanimous decision on the scorecards of all three judges.
Petecio, the lone gold medal winner at the prestigious China Open where she overcame 5?11? tall New Zealander Alexis Pritchard, totally out-boxed Kazakhstan?s national champion Gulzhaina Ubbinizayova in a lightweight bout to barge into the quarter finals where she will face Yin Junhua of China who surprisingly got the nod of the judges against Thailand's Thongjan Tassamalee who appeared to have done enough to win, connecting with the more accurate and solid punches.
Gabuco will face lanky Vietnamese southpaw Luu Thi Dyuen who showed tremendous hand-speed and excellent combinations to completely dominate Uzbekistan?s EWsonboyeva Muhayyohon who was also given a standing eight count in round two.
Earlier, bantamweight Mario Fernandez proved far too skilful for Nepal?s Puran Rai and won an easy unanimous decision with all three judges ? Yasar Cinar of Turkey, Hassan Zoubid of Morocco and Poggi Gerardo Mariano of Argentina scoring it by a 30-27 shutout for the 21 year old Filipino, a product of the ABAP grassroots development program.
Fernandez will face a tough challenge from Ammare Jabbal Hassan of Iraz who got the better of Abdullah Sadiq of Qatar in the round of 16.
Lightweight Charly Suarez as expected had a rugged clash with India?s Commonwealth Games gold medalist and Olympic quarter finalist Akhil Kumnar before prevailing in a close split decision.
Suarez lost the opening round 10-9 but stormed back to take the second by the same 10-9 margin although referee Bahodir Jumaniyazov failed to rule a knockdown when Suarez clearly dropped the Indian with a left hook in the round which was seen on the slo-mo replay of the fight on TV 5.
Despite the referee?s mistake Suarez battled gamely to win the third round and emerge victorious by a split decision which takes him into the quarter finals.
