Gabe Norwood of Rain or Shine, one of the finest defenders against the top guns of opposing teams in the PBA as well as in the just concluded FIBA World Cup and an explosive player at the offensive end , has won recognition from FIBA, adding to the honors already received by the Philippines in the tournament in Spain.
Norwood? s spectacular dunk over Argentina?s NBA big man Luis Scola was ranked No. 3 among the Top 10 Plays from the 2014 World Cup.
Videos of the Top 10 plays posted on the FIBA website showed the high-flying Norwood?s dunk at No. 3 behind monster slams by the champion United States almost unstoppable center Kenneth Faried of the Denver Nuggets and runner-up Serbia?s Nikola Kalinic.
Norwood raced alongside guards Jimmy Alapag and Jason Castro before flying high above the Indiana Pacers Scola to slam it home in a play that made the highlight reel.
InterAksyon.com, the sports news portal of TV 5 which covered the exciting FIBA World Cup action said Norwoods?s dunk beat out ?thrilling plays like a backcourt heave from Mexico?s Roman Martinez at the halftime buzzer, a reverse alley-oop dunk by Spain?s Rudy Fernandez off a ;pb from teammate Sergio Rodtriguez, a game-winning three-pointer from Turkey?s Emir Preldziz against Australia and dunks by US teammates Faried (who jad two in the Top 10) and James Harden.?
Earlier, FIBA recognized the incredible support of Filipino basketball fans during the FIBA Asia Championships in eleven memorable days in August last year when Gilas Pilipinas qualified for the World Cup and the remarkable support during tune-up games in a pocket tournament in Antibes and France and Spain followed by the FIBA World Cup Group games in Seville, honoring the Philippines with the MVF ?Most Valuable Fan? and receiving the ?Best Country Award.?
In addition, Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas president, businessman-sportsman Manny Pangilinan, the driving force behind the restoration of the Philippines standing in international basketball was invited to sit as a member of the FIBA governing body which automatically elevated him to the FIBA Asia board.
Also, Dr. Jose Raul Canlas was elected to the Medical Commission and Atty. Saga Francisco was named to the Legal Commission in what Pangilinan described as ?an excellent meeting with a full agenda that took more than three hours.?
