British welterweight boxer Jerome "Wipeout" Wilson is in a critical but stable condition after undergoing surgery due to a severe head injury following a 6th round knockout at the hands of Serge Ambomo, the 28 year old London Olympian from Cameroon at the Ice Sheffield Arena.

BBC Sports reported that promoter David Coldwell stated that a "life-saving brain operation" had been carried out on the the 29 year-old welterweight.

Wilson was knocked down in round two and the fight was knocked out in the sixth round. He was treated at ringside and given oxygen before being rushed to hospital.

Ambomo who had beaten Wilson on points in May reportedly knelt down over Wilson and kissed his head after delivering the knockout blow, unaware that his opponent was seriously hurt.

The Cameroonian's trainer Glyn Rhodes then intervened and put Sheffield-based Wilson in the recovery position.

Coldwell confirmed that Wilson remains in a medically induced coma.

A statement from Coldwell Boxing said "Jerome Wilson unfortunately suffered a severe head injury during his fight in Sheffield [on Friday night].

He is receiving the best possible care and while he receives treatment Jerome's family request privacy at this difficult time."
