Super featherweight Harmonito Dela Torre scored a smashing 4th round knockout win over over-matched Indonesian Isack Junior at the Lagao Gym in General Santos City to keep his unbeaten record which now stands at 14-0 with 9 knockouts.
Dela Torre showed definite improvement from his last two fights one of which was in Macau in winning the fringe World Boxing Federation title according to his co-manager Jim Manangquil who handles Dela Torre?s career along with well-known Australian promoter Peter Maniatis.
Manangquil told the Manila Standard/Viva Sports that in his last two fights which included a May 3 clash in which he won the vacant WBF International title when Gadwin Tubigon retired in the third round, Dela Torre was ?too stiff? but against Isack Junior ?his punches were straight and not roundhouse and overhead? and that he ?outclassed? his Indonesian opponent who last March 1 suffered a 1st round knockout at the hands of the promising, undefeated ALA Gym fighter Prince Albert Pagara.
Maniatis who is based in Melbourne told us he is ?looking at bringing the fighter to Australia for training as well as a fight because I believe it improves the fighter and he matures when living and training abroad.?
Manangquil supported the move to have Dela Torre train in Australia because ?it's good for the fighter and makes his confidence level high. When they train abroad for some months the mindset is different and they are more mature.?
Both Manangquil and Maniatis pointed to WBA light flyweight title contender Randy ?Razor? Petalcorin whose six month training stint in Australia and two fights in Melbourne, according to Manangquil ?helped his attitude and manner both inside and outside the ring.?
Petalcorin won the WBA Interim title with a 7th round TKO over Walter Tello of Panama in Shanghai last August and is now expected to get a title shot at champion Alberto Rossel of Peru.
