Following his comfortable unanimous twelve round decision in a rematch with Argentina?s Marcus Maidana, undefeated pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr said he is ready to make a fight against eight division world champion and ?Fighter of the Decade? Manny Pacquiao, happen.
In a post fight interview with Showtime?s Jim Gray who asked him what can he do to at his end to see to it that a Pacquiao fight can come to fruition because that?s the fight the fans want to see, Mayweather said ?I?ll go back and talk to my team and see what we can assess. If it presents itself let?s make it happen.?
At the same time Mayweather emphasized that ?Manny has to focus on the guy in front of him (undefeated WBO light welterweight Chris Algieri). Once he gets past that task let?s see what the future holds.?
Mayweather insisted he is ?not ducking or dodging anyone? even as he reiterated in reference to Pacquiao, ?let?s make it happen.?
Mayweather is scheduled to return to the ring in May but gave no indication that the opponent could be Pacquiao.
Former world junior welterweight champion Amir Khan who was originally denied a US visa to attend the fight in Las Vegas received one at the last minute and was at ringside to watch the fight, hoping that Mayweather will give him a crack at his welterweight title next year.
Mayweather retained his WBC/WBA welterweight titles as well as his WBC super welterweight title with a comfortable but not particularly impressive unanimous twelve round decision against Maidana which at times saw fans boo the ?Money Man? and chant Maidana?s nickname ?Chino.?
The fans didn?t bother Mayweather but what did was when he claimed Maidana bit his left hand during a clinch in the eighth round which left his hand numb the rest of the fight and an infraction which referee Kenny Bayless didn?t see and which Maidana denied.
The Argentine hurt Mayweather with a solid right that shook him in the dying seconds of the third round and went after the champion in the fourth pushing Mayweather against the ropes and throwing a flurry of punches, some of which connected.
Mayweather began to outbox Maidana beginning the fifth round catching the challenger with cracking right hands and vicious body shots even as Bayless didn?t allow Maidana to work inside as he quickly broke up the two fighters and appeared to miss the fact that TV cameras showed Mayweather often holding Maidana?s right hand.
Bayless penalized Maidana a point for pushing Mayweather down in the tenth round which according to Rick Reeno of Boxing Scene ?became angered and had his best rally of punches in several rounds.?
Mayweather handily took the eleventh round before running around the ring in the twelfth while some fans booed.
But clearly the pound for pound king, despite a bruised lip and a bleeding nose had done enough to win as reflected in the scorecards of the three judges ? Guido Cavalleri who scored it for Mayweather 115-112 and John McKaie and Dave Moretti who turned in identical scorecards of 116-111.
