With WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman in attendance, world-ranked Chinese Qiu Xiao Jun (14-2, 6 KO's) made the fifth defense of his WBC Asian Boxing Council Continental super bantamweight by scoring a devastating first round knock out over cold Russian fighter Ruslan Berchuk, 27, of Saint Petersburg during the main event of the Monday night (Sep 8) card in the City of Kunming in southwestern China.

The card was part of the celebrations of the Mid-Autumn Festival in China. After the rumble, the tough Qiu Xiao Jun was congratulated by WBC Vice President General Kovid Bhakdibhumi of Thailand (main photo).

The 24 year-old Qiu Xiao Jun - currently rated as WBC #15 - now looks forward to his American debut at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Connecticut in early October against hard-swinging American Yuandale "Money Shot" Evans (16-1, 12 KO's).

His clash against Evans, 25, will be a step up in class for the Chinese born in Suzhou, though his promoter Liu Gang is confident.

In the card's co-main event, 22-year-old Chinese Yang Xing Xin (9-3-2, 6 KO's) of Kunming scored a crushing round 8 TKO over the game Kongsuk Patanakan Gym of Thailand to retain his WBC Youth World welterweight belt.

One of the card's WBC officials in Kunming was Filipino Ferdinand "Ferdie" Estrella, 62, of Makati, Metro Manila (photo below).

FILIPINO TRAINERS IN CHINA

China continues its ever growing interest in staging championship boxing fights and last's card in the southwestern City of Kunming is another successful example.

That's a reason why some Filipino trainers now stay in China preparing promising Chinese fighters. Two of those coaches are Jun Labandia, originally from Camarines del Norte, and coach Alan Alegria of Panabo, Davao.

The Filipino coaches are currently training former WBC world champion Xiong Zhao Zhong for his not easy title battle against the slick South African WBA/IBO Minimumweight World Champion Hekkie Budler (26-1, 9 KO's) on October 25 in Monte Carlo, Monaco.

The Monday night boxing card in Kunming, China was a production of Chinese promoter Liu Gang of Zovi Boxing Promotions. Matchmaker Brico Santig of Highland Boxing.
