Batang Gilas lost a heartbreaker to arch rivals Chinese-Taipei and failed to make it to the final four and have a chance to qualify for the Under 18 World Championships next year.
In one of the most exciting, fast-paced games in the FIBA Asia Under 18 Championships, both teams battled it out to a pulsating finish before Chinese-Taipei prevailed 90-86 over the Philippines and clinched a semi final showdown against the awesome defending champions China who are looking for a third consecutive championship.
FIBA Asia reported that ?such was the pace in the game that both teams seldom took more than 16 seconds on the clock to take their attempts ? and to their own satisfaction also converted ? in a game that might go down in FIBA Asia U18 Championship history as one of the highest scoring contests with both teams battling it out on equal footing.?
Chinese-Taipei who shot well from beyond the arc scored the go-ahead triple courtesy of Lin Ming-Yi who nailed his fourth triple in nine attempts from almost center court with six seconds remaining on the shot clock to break the final 86-all deadlock and give his team an 89-86 cushion with one minute to play.
FIBA Asia noted the basket by Yi was ? one of the very few attempts by either team that came when there was less than 10 seconds on the shot-clock. Till those moments it was the fastest ever game seen in recent FIBA Asia U18 history.?
The hero of the epic Philippine victory over Malaysia on Monday, Joshua Caracut, unfortunately turned the ball over in the next possession which gave the Chinese-Taipei squad a chance to run some precious seconds off the clock.
With around 17 seconds remaining in the game after Chinese-Taipei converted on one of two free throws to give them a 90-86 advantage, the Philippines regained possession but Dave Yu and Kobe Paras failed to convert which sent the Philippines into a battle for fifth place.
Mark Dyke had a sensational game for Batang Gilas with Live Scores PH saying Dyke was ?unleashing hell down low? to finish with 26 points and 13 rebounds while Paras who played a sterling game scored 15 points, pulled down 11 rebounds, issued 3 assists, swiped 3 steals and blocked 3 shots. Radge Tongco added 16 points and issued 8 assists but committed 6 turnovers while Paul Desiderio contributed 11 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists.
It was the three-point shooting of Chinese-Taipei that did the Philippines in as they converted 13 triples while Batang Gilas could only make 4 of 22 attempts for an 18 percent clip even as the Philippines outrebounded Chinese-Taipei 48 to 38.
Tu Ssu-Han led Taipei with 23 points with Lee Kuan-Yi adding 17 points, each youngster also collaring 6 rebounds apiece.
