A former sparring partner of ?Fighter of the Decade? Manny Pacquiao, unbeaten IBF welterweight champion Shawn ?Showtime? Porter eyes a knockout when he battles undefeated British challenger Kell Brook in an entertaining Golden Boy Promotions' fight card at StubHub Center in Carson, California on Sunday, Manila Time.
Despite being a world champion, Porter is probably best known for being Pacquiao?s main sparring partner who helped the eight division world champion prepare for his November 2009 title fight against Miguel Cotto which Pacquiao won by an 12th round TKO.
Pacquiao?s trainer Freddie Roach chose Porter because he could emulate the style of Cotto and later also used him to help Pacquiao train for the fight against Joshua Clottey since Porter gave Manny all he could handle in sparring.
The aggressive Porter who has a record of 24-0-1 with 15 knockouts has said "I am going into the fight looking for that knockout. I told myself that going four rounds or less would be a beautiful night for me. But at the same time I am prepared for a 12-round fight and being a boxer I know that you must be prepared for anything.?
Porter who is trained by his father Kenny in Las Vegas added, "I am very humble, but everyone knows that when I get into that ring it's my time to shine. I will be showing off for the fans, my team, and for my future opponents.?
In what is expected to be an explosive showdown, Brook who is unbeaten in 32 fights with 22 knockouts said Porter ?is in a whole heap of trouble when he gets into the ring with me.?
The British fighter said ?Its going to be a seriously tough fight but we?re ready. He (Brook) is a strong, come-forward fighter but styles make fights and you?re going to see the best in me.?
The 26 year old Porter demolished Paulie Malignaggi in four rounds last April, prompting Porter to indicate ?he hadn?t stopped anyone for two years and all of a sudden he?s knocking out someone who had gone the distance with some massive punchers. It was weird to see.
Porter believes a big money fight against undefeated pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr may well be the reward for an impressive victory. Brook?s trainer Dominic Ingle concedes that ?Its maybe 60-40 for Shawn because its in America. But its not a fight I see Kell Brook losing.?
