Former World Boxing Council flyweight champion Sonny Boy Jaro will get another crack at a world title, this time in the super flyweight division when he battles undefeated champion Carlos ?Principe? Cuadras on September 20 in Mexico.
The 25 year old Cuadras who won the title with an 8th round technical decision over Thailand?s Srisaket Sor Rungvisai last May 31 will be making the first defense of his title against the hard-hitting Jaro, one of the prot?g?s of manager, trainer Aljoe Jaro.
At the time of the stoppage following a clash of heads which worsened a nasty cut over the let eyebrow of Cuadras which started with an accidental head-butt in the 4th round, referee Jay Nady called a halt on the advice of the ring doctor.
They went to the scorecards with Cuadras ahead 77-74 on the scorecard of judge Mauro Di Fiore, 78-73 on the scorecard of Dick Flaherty and 77-75 on the card of Cathy Leonard to seal the victory.
Jaro himself won the world flyweight title with a stunning 6th round TKO over longtime champion and WBC ?Fighter of the Year? Pongsaklek Wonjongkam on March 2, 2012, dropping Pongsaklek once in rounds one and three and twice in round six to score a smashing victory.
However, Sonny Boy Jaro lost the title in his first defense in a twelve round split decision to Japan?s Toshiyuki Igarashi on July 16, 2012.
Since that loss the 32 year old Jaro who has a record of 37-13-5 with 27 knockouts lost two more fights to Hiroyuki Hisataka and Gerpaul Valero before winning three fights in a row, all by knockouts.
His last victory was on June 28 this year when Jaro scored a 6th round TKO over Ichal Tobida after dropping him with a vicious body shot.
Cuadras who has an unblemished record of 30-0 with 24 knockouts first won the WBC Silver title with a 7th round TKO over Ronald Barrera on September 29, 2012 before scoring a unanimous twelve round decision over Filipino Fernando Lumacad on November 24, 2012.
Cuadras also scored an impressive 7th round TKO over tough Mexican Victor Zaleta on March 2, 2013 and followed it up with a 2nd round TKO of Thailand?s Songseanglek Phosuwangym on December 31, 2013.
