Mayor Benhur Abalos.
The success of the fight card presented by former two division world champion Gerry Penalosa in cooperation with Mayor BenHur Abalos where fans braved the heavy rains to come and watch the fights has inspired the Mayor and his father, former Mayor Ben Abalos, a passionate supporter of boxing, to hopefully stage fight cards once every three months.
Mayor BenHur said he himself was into boxing on his own and ?saw how difficult it is as a boxer.?
He said Mandaluyong City ?right now has a training program for young kids and that?s where we invest? and was proud that the city was champion in the National Capital Region during the Palarong Pambansa winning eight medals.
Mayor Abalos noted that in the fight card which featured the undefeated Penalosa brothers Dodie Boy Jr and Dave and former two time world title challenger Bernabe Concepcion who battled former world rated southpaw Eden Sonsona ?despite the heavy rain the venue was crowded because the people in Mandaluyong are crazy about boxing.?
The fights were covered by Viva Sports with the bouts of the Penalosa brothers to be telecast on Saturday, August 2 at 8:30 p.m. on Pinoy Box Office (PBO) over Sky Cable with a replay on Sunday at 10:30 a.m.
The battle between Concepcion and Sonsona as well as the clash between Jason Canoy and Giovani Escaner will be telecast at the same time on August 9 with a replay on August 10.
Mayor BenHur also noted ?it?s important to make sure that safety measures are in place and that young boxers learn the fundamentals.?
Mayor BenHur said that boxer Jimmy Aducal who won a ten round bantamweight bout against Danny Tampipi was a product of Mandaluyong City.
Former Mayor Ben Abalos, father of the incumbent who was Mayor when a skinny 17 year old kid Manny Pacquiao made a name for himself at the Mandaluyong Gym which was his home said ?there are many good prospects in our country.?
He said ?there is very big potential. It?s a matter of giving our fighters a break by helping them.?
The former Mayor also indicated he was pleased that his son BenHur was continuing his involvement and support for the sport which is one in which young men from humble beginnings like Pacquiao, can make a name for themselves.
