Southpaw Randy Petalcorin, the reigning Pan Asia Boxing Association light flyweight champion, is scheduled to fight for the WBA Interim title in Shanghai, China on August 26.
However, because his opponent Wisnu Kokietgym failed the medical examination, Petalcorin's co-manager, well known Australian promoter Peter Maniatis told the Manila Standard/Viva Sports that they are looking at three possible opponents and that "if no agreement can be reached we will do a PABA title defense."
However, Maniatis expressed confidence a deal can be made with the handlers of his first choice, 27 year old Walter Tello of Panama who has a record of 20-7 with 8 knockouts.
He said while Tello "looks the best, if we have to face 23 year old Saul "Baby" Juarez of Mexico who has a record of 20-3 with 11 knockouts "we'll do it because you can't pick and choose."
The other possible opponent is No. 8 ranked Gilberto Parra of Mexico who has 16 knockouts in 18 wins with only 2 defeats.
Maniatis said the 22 year old Petalcorin who has an impressive record of 21-1-1 with 16 knockouts has adapted well to living in Australia and has developed a large fan base.
Maniatis said Petalcorin trains hard, three times a day and that he is now "stronger, better and faster" after working with strength and conditioning coach Mark Russell and trainer Mick Hargreaves.
