In one of the many notable programs started by the late WBC president Don Jose Sulaiman, the WBC has presented the widow, son and mother of boxer Oscar Gonzalez who died at the age of 23 following a KO loss to Jesus Galicia last February 1 with a Life Insurance grant of US$50,000.

A talented Mexican featherweight Oscar Gonzalez suffered a brain injury during a 10th-round knockout loss to Galicia on at the Foro Polanco in Mexico City and died two days later as a result of his injuries.

Miguel Rivera of BoxingScene.com reported the bout was ?a fast-paced, highly physical fight. Fighting for the WBC silver featherweight title in Mexico City, Gonzalez scored a knockdown in the first round but began to slow down in the subsequent rounds, as the fighters continued to trade blows.?

Rivera said Gonzalez was knocked out in the 10th round ?after a powerful combination from Galicia, and the medical staff tended to him before transporting him out of the arena on a stretcher and to a hospital, where he was pronounced brain dead.?

Gonzalez had a record of 23-3 with 14 knockouts and had won three consecutive fights before the fatal knockout last February 1 where his loss was considered an upset.
