SONSONA STILL TWO POUNDS OVER THE LIMIT

?Marvelous? Marvin Sonsona was two pounds over the limit on the eve of the weigh-in for his crucial rematch with Wilfredo Vazquez Jr on the undercard of the middleweight title fight between champion Sergio ?Maravilla? Martinez of Argentina and and Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico at famed Madison Square Garden on Sunday, Manila Time.

Sonsona will clash with Vazquez Jr in a ten round featherweight bout for the North Americxan Boxing Federation title.

Sonsona?s manager Dr. Rajan Yraola said Sonsona was unofficially weighed at 128 pounds some 19 hours before the official weigh-in and he expects ?no problem in making the weight? even as he added that ?Marvin felt strong after his work on the treadmill.?
He said Sonsona ?is cooperative right now in terms of his diet unlike before and now he himself stays away from fatty foods and soft drinks.?

Dr. Yraola said that before the public workout he saw Vazquez Jr in the hotel and was ?more motivated when he saw him.?

Dr. Yraola earlier told the Manila Standard that he had ?high hopes of Sonsona victory? after his his hard work in the gym, his focus and the chance of ?revenge for us, with a win moving Marvin to the top in the rankings and a possible crack at a world title.?

Sonsona is unlikely to make the same mistakes he made in his WBO super bantamweight title fight against Vazquez Jr in Puerto Rico when he got careless and lost by a 4th round knockout.
Since that loss Sonsona has won four fights in a row against worthy opponents including a spectacular 3rd round knockout of former world champion Akifumi Shimoda of Japan in Macau last February 22 in which the lanky southpaw captured the WBO International title.

The 23 year old Sonsona?s spirits were lifted with the one-fight sponsorship deal by Mitsubishi Motors for which he got what his manager said was ?decent money? and that the fifty percent advance he received was promptly given to Marvin who did some shopping.

The endorsement deal calls for Sonsona to wear the Mitsubishi logo during the weigh in and the actual fight. Filipino promoter Sammy Gello-ani who is a partner of Sampson Lewkowicz told Dong Secuya of philboxing.com ?this is only the beginning. If he keeps on winning, bigger endorsements and bigger opportunities will surely follow.?

Mitsubishi?s agent Miguel Salazar told philboxing.com they chose Sonsona ?because he is an exciting fighter and had the potential to make it big. We could have approached Vazquez or the other fighters, but Marvin is exciting and if he wins impressively we will continue to support him in the future.?
