In an exciting Wednesday night boxing card at the plush Riu Hotel in Calle 50, Ciudad de Panam?, tough Venezuelan welterweight fighter Charlie Navarro (24-7, 19 KO's) came from behind to score an impressive win over previously unbeaten world-rated Alberto "Metralleta" Mosquera (21-1-2, 14 KO's) to capture the WBC FECARBOX Welterweight title.
Entering the 9th round, Navarro was behind in all scorecards when a huge right blow on the chin of the hard-hitting Alberto Mosquera sent the former world-title challenger to the canvas unable to beat the count of top Panamanian referee Hector Af?.
The fight was a scheduled 10-rounder. Time of the effective KO was at 23 seconds of round 9. Supervisor of the WBC fight was Jaime Salas.
In fighting girls action, unbeaten Panamanian Sayda "La Bomba" Mosquera (7-0-1, 5 KO's) of Darien Province dominated her much shorter opponent, the previously undefeated Carolina "La Princesa" Arias (9-1, 4 KO's) of Nicaragua to capture the vacant WBC Latino female bantamweight (118 lbs) strap.
The aggressive hard hitting 24-year-old Sayda Mosquera - a previous world title challenger - made good use of her advantage in size and reach to control the actions scoring the more telling blows and earn the 8-rounder unanimous decision nod. The referee of the Mosquera-Arias bout was Ms. Aida Tejada.
After the fight, her boxing idol "Hands of Stone" Roberto Duran climbed the ring to congratulate her.
In another action-packed combat, world-rated former world title contender Walter "El Rat?n" Tello (20-7, 8 KO's) scored a technical KO over Erick "Totoi" Flores (7-7, 3 KO's) to win the WBC Latino Jr. Flyweight (108 lbs) Title. The third man in the ring was Adbiel Barragan.
Also, 23-year-old Eric Walters (6-0, 4 KO's) of Colon Province, Panama, survived an early knock down to outpoint fellow country-man Manuel Largacha (5-2-2, 3 KO's) of Curund? to capture the vacant Panamanian Lightweight (135 lbs) title.
In attendance sharing time with fans was the legendary "Hands of Stone" Roberto Duran.
Also talking to fans was the undefeated WBA Featherweight World Champion "The Axeman" Nicholas Walters (24-0, 20 KO's) who last Saturday knocked out Armenian Vic Darchinyan in Macau.
Nicholas Walters - who hails from the land of reggae singer-songwrite legend Bob Marley - has done his entire boxing career and training in Panama, where many of his fans would love to see him unifying the WBA Featherweight (126 lbs) world title against fellow WBA Featherweight Champion Filipino Nonito Donaire (33-2, 21 KO's).
The entertaining Wednesday night boxing event - which was televised live on Panama's sports channel TV Max - was another production of Panama's top promoter Rogelio Espi?o, director of Promociones y Eventos del Istmo.
