Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire went running in Macao before having lunch and taking a rest prior to a light workout scheduled for 9 p.m. Monday in Macau.
The four division world chamnpion who is chasing a fifth world title when he battles WBA champion Simpiwe Vetyeka at the fabulous Cotai Arena in the plush Venetian Resort Hotel and Casino on Saturday, is in god shape and in high spirits.
His weight was just 2 pounds over the featherweight limit and his father/trainer "Dodong" Donaire told the Manila Standard, making the weight won't be a problem.
Boxing News Gerardo Granados noted that Vetyeka stopped veteran boxer Chris John to win the WBA Super World featherweight belt, and he might have done it because of his high motivation and strength; and not because he has elite boxing skills. It seems like Simpiwe has the perfect boxing style to make the old Donaire look good but I am not sure how Nonito will perform at the featherweight division or even if his big left is enough to defeat a motivated fighter.
The boxing writer added "Donaire edges Vetyeka with speed, mobility and experience but you can never count out a hungry lion who has been inspired by a world icon in the name of Nelson Mandela."
