Four division world champion Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? is down to 128 ? pounds and his faither/trainer ?Dodong? Donaire is confident he won?t have any problem making the 126 pound featherweight limit at the official weigh-in on Friday in Macau.
Donaire continue his quest for a fifth world title when he battles tough South African WBA champion Simpiwe Vetyka prior to taking a flight to Hong Kong before boarding a ferry to Macau confidently predicted he woul beat Donaire ?convincingly as I have humiliated fighters better than him in the past. Victory is the one thing on my mind because I am the chosen one.?
Vetyeka said Donaire?s ?only strength is his ability to catch his opponents with a surprise punch but I hope he is well prepared to face me because I am. Even if the fight was tomorrow I?m more than ready.?
Donaire ended his rigorous training program last Friday when he sparred nine rounds with former WBC super bantamweight Silver champion Sylvester Lopez and featherweight Vergilio Nebran and pronounced he was ready.
Nonito and his trainer/father have done something they haven?t done since the first fight against Vic Darchinyan which is to review tapes of his opponents.
The father and son team watched Vetyeka?s fights against Daud Yordan and Chris John from whom the South African won the title late last year in Western Australia when the long-reigning champion John quit at the end of the sixth round after he was dropped in the same round.
Donaire told the Manila Standard that making weight isn?t a problem having dropped to 132 pounds on the day he left for Macau from a high of 145 before he began training. Today he weighed in at 128.5 pounds.
Donaire recalled that when he fought undefeated Omar Andres Narvaez of Argentina in New York in October 2011 he lost 10 pounds in one day while against Guillermo Rigondeaux he lost 7 pounds in a day and for the Vic Darchinyan rematch last November he lost 5 pounds in one day, adding ?Right now it's nothing.?
Donaire also said he isn?t too concerned about strength and conditioning coach Nick Curson not making the trip after falling ill with a nasty virus because Mike Bassel will be there and ?he is great at what he does. Nick thought me a few things for this camp and hopefully the next time we can push my full potential in terms of speed but I know Mike has already released that power from the previous fights. All I need is the speed? and his father/trainer ?Dodong? Donaire believes he?s got it all in place for the Vetyeka fight.
