American strength and conditioning coach Nick Curson won?t be with Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire when he travels to Macau on May 24 for his WBA title fight against tough South African world champion Simpiwe Vetyeka at the Cotai Arena of the plush Venetian Resort Hotel and Casino on May 31.
Curson who spent three days in hospital apparently with a virus, is still recovering and told the Manila Standard he doesn?t wish to contaminate the four division world champion at a crucial stage of his preparation for what could be a war in the ring.
Curson said ?Nonito knows what he needs to do and is perfectly fine. He will be okay. His old trainer Mike Bassel will be there for the last week. I?ll give him instructions and Mike and I have talked plenty of times. He?s a good guy who knows what he?s doing and he will keep Nonito going, that?s for sure.?
Donaire who is chasing a world title in a fifth weight division has trained rigorously and gone through a demanding plyometrics regimen under the watchful eye of Curson.
Curson was responsible for getting WBO light flyweight champion Donnie ?Ahas? Nietes in superb shape for his mandatory title defense against Interim champion Moises Fuentes of Mexico who he dropped three times en route to a spectacular 9th round TKO at the Mall of Asia Arena last May 10.
Donaire told us his weight ?is no problem? and his training in the sweltering heat at the Elorde Gyms of brothers Johnny and ?Bebot? Elorde has been a great help.
He also said the sparring with Lopez was particularly good and that the former WBC Silver super bantamweight champion ?had a great jab, was a good boxer and tough? and that overall ?the sparring was good.?
Donaire will wind up his sparring at 8:00 p.m. today at the Johnny Elorde Gym along Sucat Road in Paranaque and is likely to go twelve rounds.
