Senator Ferdinand ?Bongbong? Marcos Jr will be the special guest and speaker at the 14th Annual Gabriel ?Flash? Elorde Boxing Awards at the Sofitel Hotel Harbour Garden Tent on Roxas Boulevard.
In a glittering evening where world, regional and national champions as well as boxing officials are honored, it would be interesting to listen to what Senator Marcos has to say about the sport itself and Philippine sports in general.
The event honors the late ?Flash? Elorde who reigned as world junior lightweight champion for almost seven-and-a-half years and was the first Filipino boxer enshrined in the Boxing Hall of Fame in 1993.
Elorde is among a roster of great junior lightweights of the World Boxing Council in a poll being conducted by the WBC among fight fans who will vote for the greatest among them.
In its 20th anniversary in New York, Elorde and the late classy Alexis Arguello were honored as the greatest junior lightweights in the history of the WBC at that time.
Elorde would have been 79 on Tuesday but despite his untimely passing at the age of 50, Elorde is remembered with a great deal of respect and affection for what he achieved and more importantly for his remarkable humility.
Elorde won the world title on March 16, 1960 at the inauguration of the famed Araneta Coliseum which is today acknowledged as the Mecca of sports and entertainment in the Philippines.
Before a screaming crowd which young promoter George ?Nene? Araneta estimated at 36,000, Elorde scored a spectacular 7th round knockout over American Harold Gomes of Rhode Island, dropping him five times en route o the victory. In a return bout at the Cow Palace in San Francisco, Elorde stopped Gomes in the very first round.
A poor farmer?s son from the town of Bogo, Cebu, Elorde punched his way into the hearts of millions of his adoring countrymen.
The Annual Awards will salute the ?Boxers of the Year? Class of 2013 which will include four-division world champion Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire, WBO light flyweight champion Donnie Nietes, IBF light flyweight champion Johnreil Casimero and WBO minimum weight champion Merlito ? Tiger ? Sabillo.
Donaire is scheduled to arrive with his wife Rachel and their son Jarel on Monday.
