TRAINER ?DODONG? DONAIRE SR SAYS ALVAREZ HAS A GOOD CHANCE OF WINNING VS RIVERA

Alvarez.
Trainer Nonito ?Dodong? Donaire Sr believes that undefeated Joebert ?Little Pacman? Alvarez (13-0-1, 6 KO?s) has a good chance of defeating Mexican flyweight champion Julian ?Chicano? Rivera in a battle for the vacant Continental Americas flyweight title on April 4 in Mexico.

In an overseas telephone conversation with the Manila Standard, Donaire Sr, father of 2012 ?Fighter of the Year? and four-division world champion Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire, said Alvarez who trains in Donaire Sr?s newly opened gym in Oakland, California ?has a big chance. He is a good kid with fast hands and has a few similar movements with Manny Pacquiao although he is not that fast.?

The trainer who handled his son when he scored a sensational 5th round knockout over Vic Darchinyan to win the IBF/IBO flyweight belts on July 7, 2007 told us that Alvarez ?is smart and courageous? adding that ?he is strong even though you think he has no power.?

Donaire Sr told us that ?Joebert caught one of his sparring partners, an experienced amateur who recently turned pro with a body shot that really hurt him? and even sparred with a featherweight two days ago.

However, the trainer conceded that Rivera ?is a tough opponent? whose record of 13-8-1 with 2 knockouts is misleading because ?he has been stopped only once and had faced some quality opponents.?

He said he had watched some of Rivera?s fights and had instructed Alvarez ?to move in and out and use his speed which is what he?s doing in sparring.?|

He said "training went very well today. I went 12 rounds with Joebert who is really in shape and wasn't even breathing hard. He is 100 percent in shape and we still have yhree more weeks in training."

Rivera won the Mexican flyweight title with a twelve round unanimous decision over Edgar Jimenez on July 13, 2012 and retained the title with a split decision win over Ulises Lara on November 23 last year.

He fought for the WBA world Interim flyweight title but lost to Argentina?s Juan Carlos Reveco on November 10, 2012. A report from ringside said Reveco who is known for his steady body attack utilized his strengths but Rivera ?fought gamely and held up to see the final bell? although Reveco fought almost the entire twelve rounds with a cut on his right eye which failed to slow down the champion.
