Former world champion Alexander "El Explosivo" Munoz has vowed to knock out undefeated WBO Intercontinental junior featherweight/super bantamweight champion Genesis "Azukal" Servania (23-0, 9 KO's) when they clash in the main event of "The Future Is Now" at the plush Solaire Resort and Casino along Manila Bay on Saturday.
Both fighters made the 122 pound limit at the official weigh-in before a large crowd at Robinson's Galeria activity center on Friday.
Munoz, the former WBA world super flyweight champion who won the title from Celes Kobayashi and successfully defended it six times in Japan against such big names as Katsushige Kawashima and Nobuo Nashiro among others, has power in both hands and his record of 28 knockouts in 36 wins proves he can punch.
Interestingly, the five losses of Munoz have come against top class opponents such as world champions Cristian Mijares, Martin Castillo, Koki Kameda and the newest Mexican sensation WBC super bantamweight champion Leo Santa Cruz.
Munoz told the Manila Standard that he is a typical Venezuelan warrior and after three months of intense training is ready to give Servania the fight of his life. But the soft-spoken Servania isn't awed by the reputation or the tough talk of Munoz, saying he will show who is master in the ring.
Servania who was named WBO "Best Boxer of the Year" following his spectacular 2nd round knockout of Panama's Rafael "El Torito" Concepcion, the former WBA Interim super flyweight champion who won the title with a stunning 10th round knockout of A J "Bazooka" Banal, honed his skills and reinforced his punching power in a grinding regimen of sparring and workouts in San Diego, Freddie Roach's Wild Card Gym where he engaged WBA world champio Quigg in a furious exchange and against tough Mexican fighters in the gyms of Erik "El Terrible" Morales and Antonio Margarito in Tijuana, said he's ready for anything Munoz brings.
ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer told the Standard that five years ago he dreamed of bringing world class fighters and big title fights to the Philippines saying "we have world class fighters and champions like Manny Pacquiao, Nonito Donaire, Donnie Nietes and Merlito "Tiger" Sabillo "so why not showcase our ability to compete in the international arena with the backing of such a big network as ABS-CBN and the support of Mr. Gabby Lopez and Peter Musngi."
Aldeguer said there are a series of great fights lined up including the mandatory rematch between Donnie Nietes and Moises Funetes whose first clash ended in a majority draw. He said "this is what Pinoy Pride is all about. We want to bring great fights for the fans because this is what they are looking for and we are very excited."
Stepping up as the supporting main event will be unbeaten "Prince" Albert Pagara (18-0, 12 KO's) against rugged Indonesian Isack Junior (22-4-2 with 8 KO's) while "King Arthur" Villanueva (24-0, 14 KO's) goes up against a late substitute for Juan Hernandez who was injured in a motorcycle accident in Mexico, Fernando "Enano" Aguilar (9-6, 1 KO) who arrived just in time for the weigh-in.
One other fight that should draw a lot of attention is that of Cuban Reymi Castellano Aleye (3-0, 1 KO) a classy fighter who will make his Manila debut against Diover Mangaya-Ay of La Union.
The fights will be telecast on the pre-eminent Channel 2 of ABS-CBN at 10:15 a.m. on Sunday.
