CEBU CITY -- Filipino challenger Z "The Dream" Gorres totally outboxed and outclassed Mexican champion Fernando "Cochulito" Montiel in the first 8 rounds in last night's bout for the WBO super flyweight crown before more than 20,000 spectators at the Cebu City Sports Complex in Cebu City.

Montiel however dug deep within himself to comeback strong in the last 4 rounds to snatch victory from certain defeat and won by split decision in what many considered as a controversial result.

Raul Caiz scored the bout 115-111 for Montiel, Denny Nelson had it 115-111 for Gorres, while Chuck Giampa saw it 114-112 for Montiel.

Referee Sammy Viruet of New York made two point deductions on Gorres in the 10th and 12th rounds without prior warnings, a decision which were questioned by the Gorres camp.

"The referee won it for Montiel," lamented Antonio L. Aledguer, the highly respected Cebu sportsman who nurtured the career of Gorres and staged the well-organized and highly successful boxing promotion.

"The result is good for Philippine boxing," said Golden Boy matchmaker Sampson LewKowicz. "Gorres and Montiel could meet again during the World Cup for a rematch and the fight will be much bigger," Lewkowicz added.

Meanwhile the Montiel-Gorres fight photos are now up at PhilBoxing.com's Fight Gallery. Click here: http://www.philboxing.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=39.
