COACH GUIAO COMMENDS REFS FOR 2ND HALF PERFORMANCE, BAFFLED BY THE TURNAROUND FROM IST HALF

Rain Or Shine head coach Yeng Guiao who watched his team triumph over Petron Blaze to enter the PBS Finals from the comfort of his home in Magalang, Pampanga did something he normally doesn?t do ? commend the referees for the way they officiated the second half even as he couldn?t explain the turnaround from the first.
In a telephone conversation with the Manila Standard, Guiao was upset at the way the referees called tacky fouls against his players that resulted in 17 free throws for Petron Blaze in the first half while his players hardly got the calls.

He said ?the second half was well officiated and I have no idea or explanation as to why they can officiate well in the second half. I see no reason why they could not officiate well in the first.?

Guiao told us he has regularly drilled into the minds of his players what to expect saying ?they know what to expect. We talk about this every day. This is what to expect, this is what is going to happen the way its been happening every game anyway and we?ve been able to win in spite of all of this.?
He commended his players for ?being prepared mentally. If they had given up, if they had been frustrated they would not have won the game.?

Guiao credited what he referred to as ?our our investment in the team in terms of giving them the breaks, keeping them together. We were not really moving around our players like other teams. We stuck with them, we were patient with them The only time we added players was when we got from the draft because they are the cheapest to get and we couldn?t afford recruits other than the cheapest ones who are the rookies.?
His attitude was to make use of them and ?to try to improve them because we cannot afford the superstars. We had to create our own philosophy, our own system to give ourselves a chance at winning. Its paying off.?

The fiery coach who was ejected on two technical fouls in games 4 and 5 admitted ?we made some mistakes, we have been unsuccessful in some instances and just making it to the finals is a reward in itself.?

Guiao said ?these are young guys ? no name players but they are hard workers and we don?t violate any rules. We adhere strictly to the rules of the PBA and we are really proud of that.?
When we reminded the coach of the dirty finger sign that saw him thrown out of Game 4 he responded by saying ?there was a consequence to that and I paid it.? Guiao was suspended for one game and fined a whopping P100,000.

However, he took issue with the suspension indicating ? I subscribe to the theory to fine but not suspend in a crucial game. When some of the players get into fights, elbow noses all of these flagrant fouls there were no suspension because they were crucial games. But in my case aside from the record fine they had to suspend me. They knew pretty well that Paul (Lee) was not going to be 100 percent and Jervy (Cruz) had a broken nose but you still take the coach out .?

In the end Guiao believes it paid off because, he said, ? the guys were determined to make use of the events to motivate them positively for this game.?
