Argentina?s Marcos Maidana is way ahead in the public poll as the next opponent for undefeated pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr set for May 3 in Las Vegas.

Criticized in the past for handpicking opponents he could beat, Mayweather offered to fight one of two opponents he named ? Britain?s former light welterweight champion Amir Khan and the tough Maidana who is trained by 2012 ?Trainer of the Year? Robert Garcia with Alex Ariza as strength and conditioning coach and allowed fans to vote for their choice.

In the results of the poll so far published by Fight News Maidana has received 80 percent of the votes with Khan way behind with a mere 20 percent.

The 30 year old Maidana is coming off a career defining win over Mayweather prot?g? and previously undefeated Adrian Broner (27-0, 22 KO?s) last December 14, scoring a lopsided twelve round unanimous decision in San Antonio, Texas after dropping the cocky American in rounds 2 and 8 to capture the WBA welterweight title.

He has a record of 35-3 with 31 knockouts although he dropped a fairly close unanimous decision to Khan on December 11. 2010 in Las Vegas.
