ABS-CBN Sports & Action, the revamped Studio 23, will telecast the exciting showdown between WBO junior lightweight champion Mikey Garcia and the tough challenger Juan Carlos Burgos from New York?s Madison Square Garden at 12:00 noon on Sunday.
Garcia, younger brother of 2013 ?Trainer of the Year? and former world champion Robert Garcia has been touted as a possible future opponent for ?Fighter of the Decade? Manny Pacquiao but most boxing people believe Garcia still has some way to go before he can face-off against Pacquiao who is a welterweight.
Although Garcia is undefeated winning 28 of his 33 fights by stoppage, he won?t find Burgos an easy opponent in the first defense of the title he won with an impressive 8th round knockout of Puerto Rico?s Roman ?Rocky? Martinez last November.
The 26 year old Garcia won the WBO featherweight title when he scored a rousing 8th round technical decision over Orlando Salido whom he dropped twice in the opening round and once again in the third and fourth. However, an accidental clash of heads left Garcia with a broken nose and when he was unable to continue they went to the scorecards which gave Garcia the comfortable win.
Garcia failed to make the weight in his title defense against Juan Manuel ?Juanma? Lopez and lost the title on the scales although he stopped Lopez in the fourth round.
Garcia, who told us he moved up in weight so his good friend and stablemate Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire could go after his featherweight crown captured the 130 pound title in his first attempt against Martinez with an 8th round knockout.
The 26 year old Burgos from Tijuana, Mexico has an impressive record of 30-1-2 with 20 knockouts. His only loss was against Japan?s stylish southpaw Hozumi Hasegawa who won a twelve round decision in a clash for the vacant WBC featherweight title in November 2010.
Burgos won five fights in a row before he was held to a split decision draw in a WBO junior lightweight challenge against Martinez before once again being forced into a split decision draw against Yakibu Amidu last July although several ringside observers claimed Burgos deserved to win the Martinez title fight.
Well known boxing writer Ron Jackson of South Africa points out that ?If Garcia has one weakness, it is that he tends to start too slowly. Burgos usually attacks from the first bell and keeps throwing punches throughout the fight. There is no doubt that the champion will have his hands full to keep Burgos away from his title.?
