Mauricio Sulaiman.
World Boxing Council executive secretary Mauricio Sulaiman has succeeded his later legendary father Don Jose Sulaiman as president of the WBC at least for the present.

The Manila Standard was informed that the members if the WBC board of governors discussed the succession issue after the burial rites for Don Jose who passed away at the age of 82 following major heart surgery last October.

Sulaiman headed the WBC since December 1975 when he succeeded the Philippines Justiniano Montano Jr.

The takeover by Mauricio Sulaiman is based on the Constitution and By Laws of the WBC which were crafted by the late eminent lawyer Rudy Salud who was the first executive secretary of the WBC.

When Montano decided to step down, Salud was in line to succeed him but turned down a groundswell of support in deference to his longtime friend Montano.

Under the Constitution, should the position of president become vacant for any reason then the executive secretary takes over for 90 days.

The Standard was told that the WBCs Board of Governors are scheduled to meet from February 2 through February 7 in Shanghai to discuss which individual will take over as the permanent president of the organization.

Boxingscene reported that ?while there are several candidates, Mauricio is the popular choice and the frontrunner among many in the organization.?

He has received widespread support from such individuals as promoters Don King, Japan?s Akihiko Honda and Mexico?s Fernando Beltran among others.
