The much awaited rematch between Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire and Australian southpaw Vic Darchinyan which was telecast by the giant broadcast network ABS-CBN over its pre-eminent Channel 2, was the No.1 rating program nationwide last Sunday.

Kantar Media reported that the rematch which Donaire won by a spectacular comeback in a 9th round TKO, topped the ratings nationwide covering both Urban and Rural Philippines with 23.6 percent beating GMA?s Pepito Manaloto Ang Tunay Na Kuwento which registered 21.2 percent followed by ABS-CBN?S TV Patrol Weekend with a rating of 20.9 percent.

In Urban Philippines Donaire-Darchinyan rated a remarkable 25.4 percent with GMA second with 23.6 percent and another GMA program, Kapuso with Jessica Soho rating 21.8 percent.
The Rural ratings dropped a little because of the lack of power in many areas in the Visayas in particular but still rated 21.1 percent while TV Patrol Weekend rated 19.8 percent and another ABS-CBN program, Goin Bulilit garnering 19.1 percent.

The ratings for the Donaire-Darchinyan rematch once again underscored the popularity of boxing on television which has been reinforced by the consistently high ratings of the ?Pinoy Pride? series which is a joint undertaking by the premier promotional outfit in Asia, ALA Promotions and the TV network ABS-CBN.

The strength of boxing and the network?s large following were underscored to some extent when the successful title defense of IBF light flyweight champion Johnreil Casimero who scored an 11th round TKO victory over Mexico?s Felipe Salguero rated just over 9.0 percent last October 26 while the 2nd round TKO victory of ALA boxing gym?s Genesis Servania against former world super flyweight champion Rafael ?El Torito? Concepcion which took place on the same night in Cebu but was telecast the following morning on Channel 2 rated over 14 percent.

ALA Promotions youthful president Michael Aldeguer told the Manila Standard he was pleased with the public response to the sport of boxing and that it encourages ALA Promotion to further expand its horizons and to significantly improve the quality of its fight cards while developing promising new talent.

Aldeguer said "the ratings for boxing, whether its our promotion or some other promoters cards shows that the sport has arrived and we should not concede that Mexico and Puerto Rico are the powerhouse nations in boxing when we have some of the greatest fighters in the Philippines led by ?Fighter of the Decade? Manny Pacquiao and 2012 ?Fighter of the Year? Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire as well as WBO world champions Donnie Nietes who has reigned since 2007 and exciting Merlito ?Tiger? Sabillo."
WBO light flyweight champion Nietes and WBO minimum weight champion Sabillo, a former street fighter from Bacolod City will defend their titles when big-time boxing returns to the Big Dome ? the Araneta Coliseum on March 30 with Nietes battling Sammy ?Guty? Gutierrez of Mexico and Sabillo facing undefeated 21 year old power punching Carlos Buitrago of Nicaragua while ?Pinoy Pride? headliners Jason Pagara, Milan Melindo and AJ ?Bazooka? Banal will also be featured on the blockbuster card.
