Former three division world champion Miguel Cotto got some bad news hours before his battle with Delvin Rodriguez of the Dominican Republic at the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida but that only appeared to fire him up to blast Rodriguez in three dominating rounds.

A court denied Cotto?s appeal against an October 2012 decision that ordered him to pay his uncle and former trainer Evangelista Cotto $2 million after Evangelista attacked Cotto in training and was hurt and taken to hospital after the violent confrontation.

Cotto fired his uncle who claimed the fighter owed him money from previous fights but despite an appeal by Cotto?s lawyer the court denied the appeal.

In the ring with celebrated trainer Freddie Roach in his corner and before a predominantly Puerto Rican crowd of nearly 12,000, Cotto hammered Rodriguez with a series of vicious left hooks to the body and cracking rights to the head that staggered Rodriguez late in the second round.

Another thundering left hook sending Rodriguez crashing to the canvas but before he got there Cotto landed another left hook and a right hand giving the referee no choice but to stop the massacre at 18 seconds into the third round.

With the win the 32 year old Cotto improved to 38-4 with 31 knockouts while Rodriguez who is one year older dropped to 28-7-3 with 16 knockouts.
