Manchester City dismantled defending Barclay?s Premier League champions Manchester United who were without ace striker Robin Van Persie who was injured in practice on the eve of the Manchester derby, scoring a handsome 4-1 victory before a sea of blue at the Etihad Stadium in a match broadcast ?live? on the cable network BALLS late Sunday.

Arsenal, with a comfortable 3-1 win over Stole City moved to the top of the standings followed by Tottenham Hotspurs with Arsene Wenger?s rejuvenated side ahead on goal difference as the Spurs could only manage a 1-0 win over Cardiff.

BBC Sport?s chief football writer Phil McNulty reported it was a day of delight for new City boss Manuel Pellegrini as he watched the rampant Blues make a powerful statement about their Premier League ambitions.

Sergio Aguero, the son-in-law of Argentina?s famed striker Diego Maradona and Yaya Toure gave City a commanding half-time lead and any slim hopes of a United recovery were snuffed out by a second goal from Aguero and rampant Samir Nasri in the first five minutes after halftime.within five minutes of the restart.

Wayne Rooney who looked like the only United player capable of scoring connected on a superb, curling free-kick late in the game but it was nothing more than small consolation for David Moyes who succeeded the redoubtable Sir Alex Ferguson and has presided over a less than impressive start to the season.

McNulty noted that United may have been without Robin van Persie because of a thigh strain but the absence of one player - no matter how significant - cannot account for the manner in with Moyes' side were utterly outclassed.

Arsenal, with their seventh consecutive victory after a stunning loss to Aston Villa in their opening game were bannered by their classy German signing Mesut Ozil who had a hand in all three goals by the Gunners.

Aaron Ramsey notched his seventh goal in eight games by knocking in after Asmir Begovic saved Ozil's free-kick and although Stoke equalised before the break when Geoff Cameron steered in after Marko Arnautovic hit the post and did have considerable possession they were done in by goals from fullback Per Mertesacker and Bacary Sagna who both rose high above their defensive men to head in Ozil crafted set-pieces.

BBC Sport said the resurgence of Arsenal was another demonstration of how Ramsey and Ozil, making his home debut, are becoming pivotal players for the Gunners.
