Philippine David Cup star Treat Huey and his British partner Dominic Inglot who were seeded No. 16 have been ousted in the US Open Men?s Doubles quarter finals losing in straight sets to No. 10 seeds Ivan Dodig of Croatia and Marcelo Melo of Brazil at the Louis Armstrong Stadium in Flushing Meadows, New York.
After a tight first set which they lost 5-7, Huey and Inglot committed a maze of errors to lose the second set 6-3 and end an amazing run in which they had scored a smashing straight sets win over No. 3 seeds Marcel Granollers and March Lopez of Spain, 7-6/6-0 in the round of sixteen.
The coach of Huey and Inglot at the University of Virginia where they never played together Brian Boland who was at courtside to cheer them on said after their upset win in the round of 16, ?I?m really impressed with how far they?ve come over the course of the last several years through a lot of hard work and commitment to their game.?
At Wimbledon last June, Huey and Inglot lost to grandslam winning identical twin brothers Mike and Bob Bryan in straight sets although one set went into a tiebreak.
The first set at the US Open went with serve with Huey hammering two aces back-to-back to make it 4-4 after earlier showing great touch and a deft volley at the net.
With two aces, big serving Inglot tied the score at 5-all but Huey hit long on Melo?s serve and then committed two double faults on his serve to enable Dodig and Melo to take the first set 7-5.
After Dodig who was the best player on the court took the opening game of the second set finishing with a huge ace, Inglot answered with an ace of his own to clinch his service game to make it 1-1. But Melo held his serve without trouble and Huey double faulted after which a perfect return by Dodig gave then a 3-1 lead.
Dodig finished off a crucial point in game 5 with a ripper down the forehand side which the lanky Inglot couldn?t even reach to send the Croatian-Brazilian duo up 4-1 before Inglot hit long and then double-faulted to be on the verge of defeat 1-5.
Huey and Inglot with one last gasp effort broke Dodig and Melo for the first time in the match for a 2-5 count and with Huey coming through with a solid second serve to claw back to 5-3 there was still some hope.
But Dodig was not to be denied and with three excellent serves raced to a 40-0 lead before he passed Huey to seal a place in the semi finals alongside Melo.
With 6 double faults to 3 and winning only 68 percent of their first serves to the 83 percent of Dodig and Melo and 42 percent of second serves to the 64 percent of their opponents who also nailed all three of their break points to 1 of 2 by Huey and Inglot along with 13 unforced errors to the 8 of Dodig and Melo, it was clear that the Philippine Davis Cup star who is expected to be home for the Cup Tie against New Zealand and his British partner had an unfortunate off-day.
