Former WBO and Ring Magazine super bantamweight champion and 2012 ?Fighter of the Year? Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire wants to return to the ring against three division world champion Vic Darchinyan on November 9 in Corpus Christi, Texas and re-establish his name.
Donaire told the Manila Standard that his priority right now is to regain his status as a top class fighter and added, ? I want to come back and establish my name and that?s all I?m thinking of right now.?
Donaire said ?I?m getting ready and will train hard and not let anything disrupt his preparation? for the rematch with Darchinyan from whom he won the IBF/IBO flyweight titles with a stunning 5th round knockout on July 7, 2007.
He said he had brought his weight down to 135 pounds and feels really good.
Donaire told us ?when I?m in shape to start sparring again I will drive to Oxnard once in a while to work on a game-plan with trainer Robert Garcia.?
Donaire appeared cool to the idea of getting past Darchinyan and then fighting Evgeny Gradovich for the featherweight title pointing out that the Russian was his sparring partner when he was preparing for the Wilfredo Vazquez Jr title fight and is a teammate who is also trained by Garcia.
He said right now he is focused on the Darchinyan fight and is ?not thinking at all? about a possible fight with Gradovich.
Donaire said ?there are other fighters out there who hold titles? and indicated he would like to face the winner of the Orlando Cruz-Omar Salido clash for the vacant WBO 126 pound title.
Darchinyan has been training in the mountains of Armenia and according to his manager Frank Espinoza will be in Los Angeles by Wednesday.
