The Philippines Benezer Alolod was badly battered by former IBF straw weight champion Nkosinathi Joyi of South Africa in a WBC International light flyweight title fight at the Emperors Palace in Gauteng, South Africa on Sunday.
In a battle of southpaws the strong Joyi who had earlier beaten talented Filipinos in former IBF minimum weight champion Florante Condes in a title eliminator and IBO minimum weight champion Gabriel Pumar by a 1st round knockout in an IBO minimum weight title fight, hammered Alolod to the canvas to be counted out at 2:48 of the ninth round even though boxing writer Ron Jackson of Super Sport in South Africa felt referee Simon Xamlashe should have stopped the fight earlier to save Alolod who was taking a bad beating.
Jackson gave Alolod credit for being gutsy as he absorbed vicious left and right combinations to the head and body and was outclassed by Joyi throughout the fight.
The Filipino began to wilt in the eighth round and Jackson criticized the referee for not stopping the fight pointing out that Alolod was not a puncher and had only two wins by stoppage in previous bouts.
With the win Joyi improved to 24-2 with 17 knockouts while Alolod who was not even ranked by the Games and Amusements Board dropped to 12-5-4 with 2 knockouts.
The 30 year old Joyi was coming off a twelve round split decision loss to fellow South African Hekkie Budler in an IBO minimum weight title fight last June 15 while the 22 year old Alolod won a 7th round technical split decision over Rey Loreto in a WBC International light flyweight title fight in a rematch last March 16 after dropping an eight round decision in December 2010.
